Exhaust plate...
Can you show us a pic of what you mean? I think what you're on about is a heat shield, and the presence of jubilee clips make me think it'd come off before... Why not make one yourself, it'd be nice and unique that way!

Fork cones
I don't think they will fit, If they're the ones I'm thinking of they're made for hollow spindles... despite the sellers promises that they will fit the xvs650.

VA VA VA VA VA VOOOOOOM....
Been washing mine today too: (yes, that is the reflection of my road/neighbours houses you can see in the tank) I used: Muc-off ACF-50 and Stardust Eclat polish p.s. If you're gonna tap an M8 you'll want to drill a bit smaller than 8mm, 6.8mm should do nicely.

Trip switch
Right, The kickstand "trip" switch exists to stop you driving with your kickstand/sidestand down (a sensible move eh?) The trigger for the switch is a little bit of metal at the pivot of the sidestand. My first thought is to make sure this moves with the sidestand (Mine came a bit loose, but worked the other way - I could put the bike into gear and ride with the stand down -Dangerous!) Torque up the bolt to be sure it's not loose. You should be able to start the bike with the sidestand down, as long as it's in neutral (tip:since you're light isn't working - move the bike backwards and forwards without using the clutch to make sure you're in neutral)

Nodding bikers?
Well, not ALWAYS... just when they're in a good mood. (If they point it means you're doing something wrong)
