  1. Dont forget the cable(s) may have streched and with bad routing may now be pulling incorrectly check that both slides appear in the balance windows (or removable screws dependant on carbs fitted) if they dont pull together adjust the adjusters on the top of the carbs then adjust at the grip to achieve the correct free play it is possible that the cable has snaged on the bottom yoke and may have got worse over a period of time Regards Jim

    xs400 Rocker Arms

Hi I agree with Drewpy but just a thought (I dont have access to one) look at a parts manual and see if the root part number end with either 14 or 15 ... the root number is the second section i.e 1L9-11181-00 so the root would be 11181 and for the anaoraks first three are the original model code next 5 are the part, the next 2 are the modification further digits indicate colour or material (or both) ... so in the example 1L9-11181-00 would be a head gasket originally fitted to the 1L9 XS250 , 1L9-11181-01 would be mod 1, 1L9-11181-02 would be the same but second mod and (if possible) 1L9-11181-00-E0 would be a coloured head gasket and just to follow it through 4L0-11181-00 would be the head gasket for the 4L0 RD350 and so on ... anorack off ! Regards Jim
  4. Ahh XS500 oil delivery has always been a problem the filter needed to be replaced at 3k miles else total engine melt down could happen !!! In the UK (and i the past) oil filter mounting plates were made in order to fit a BLMC Mini oil filter, which got around (from riders, I never did it) the problem along with adding more oil, 4 liters rather than 3 and a bit liters, but as I worked within a Yamaha shop (which would not condone the mod) we just replaced the filter on time if not before time. Other 'mods' were to to remove the balance shaft & chain and plug the remaining hole which gave a couple more ponies, no increase in vibes and got rid of that chain thrashing around in the l/h crankcase cover ! If the bike has a 2 piece head head make sure the head nuts & bolts are well tight ! Regards Jim
  5. Hi Thats a badly routed cable Regards Jim
  6. Hi Clarky I guess you have an air leak ... check the rubber tube between the 2 carbs or if not fitted the metal tube across the reed blocks Regards Jim
  7. Hi, what does snow look like ? in the UK a Jet ski section would be better as it is well wet here Regards Jim
  8. I Worked with Yamaha for a good number of years but I also worked with MZ & Jawa at the same time and tbh both iron cutain bikes were good in their own field and I guess you are right buying a #24 from the Choggies is a bad idea Regards Jim
  9. Oh Ok , but I guess Roast Beef and all the trimmings would be better ! Regards Jim
  10. I would say not the Divi could do with a run !!!! Regards Jim
  11. Hi Nath First off the oil light coming on when you press the start button indicates low battery charge (along with clicking/buzz from the relay) ! For help with the carbs .. I could pop across Regards Jim
  12. Hi, ah a 2A7 bike that now makes sense as a DT175MX. In those days Yamaha used a strange system ... in certain parts of the world the bikes were sold via the letter (i.e DT175E) and in other parts of the world by another title (i.e DT175MX). As to gummed up rings (which I guess you have sorted) gently prise out the rings from their grooves and use a screwdriver to clean out the grooves in the piston and clean the rings and refit ... as they are off the piston it would be a good idea to check the end gap of the rings just to make sure they are not worn out. Regards Jim
  13. to the forum Top end rattles from the 500 motor could indicate some thing serious I would adjust the chain & replace the oil & filter (the filter blocked easy) and caused oil starvation to the top end of the motor Regards Jim
  14. Hi Paul, I have been in Eygpt for 2 weeks & prior to that I was given a large project at work so my time went into that .... it's just the E bit throwing me Regards Jim

    What other Hobbies

Hi, I drive trucks to but I guess I do get paid for it Regards Jim
  16. I've just got back from 2 weeks in Eygpt and apart from the Choggie 125's/250's the most popular bike was the Jawa 350 twin so I guess if we lived there we would be taking the pee out of Jap bikes
  17. to the forum RXS100's had a rev counter RS100's did not so I'm wondering if you have an RS or RXS If you have either bike you may need to decoke the exhaust system & exhaust port, check the air filter and inlet tract if you have an RS you may need to set the ignition timing correctly if you have an RXS you may need to look at the YEIS tube from the reed block to the YEIS chamber. can you explain what you have done to the carb ? Regards Jim
  18. Hi Matt you should use new circlips of the correct type as if they come out when the engine is running the result could be real bad ! would this bike be circa 1977 or later as at this point of time the E was the 12v electric start version (UK only had DT125E but other parts of the world had a 175 version) ? Regards Jim

    xs 750

I guess you are over jetted !!! I repaired an XS750E back in 1983 suffering the same fault (i.e a misfire over 4k, in fact nearly like running on one) and it was down to oversize main jets Regards Jim
  20. Hi Jay, you need to get the front pipe off as the d shaped section will be in the barrel (the finned bit of the engine) whithout work here there is no way you will get any more go or power if you alter the gearing alone you may get a higher top speed down hill or on the flat but you may be pushing the bike up hill. I also pointed out the YEIS tube which can cause performance issues on the V50 (along with worn auto clutches etc). With regard to plastics you could fit some leg shields from the V70A (they had 'mate' written on them) but you must take into account a scooterette was really never pimped. On a performance point of view the following engines will fit V70,V75,V75A,V80,V90 for sure and the U7/U7A may also fit but given the age of the bike if you could get hold of the V80 engine & front exhaust pipe and a FS1 silencer (pre 1977) you will have a bike that will either wheelie in all 3 gears (V50 gearing) or do about 60 in most places (front sprocket 14t, v50 std 11t). tbh with the 80 motor & the gearing set I did manage nearly 70 on the M40 on the way to London from my locale Regards Jim
  21. Hi Dave, the pulse coil is in the mag and feeds the red/white wire. If this small coil get confused the timing will always be out ... the part number you would need is 3M2-85580-20. The reason the engine striking back is due to the ignition timing being incorrect. Wait till you get a big 4 stroke single Regards Jim
  22. see my other post but this will not be the whole story if you want to make the bike fly Regards Jim
  23. Hi & to the forum you dont state the age of the bike but if its an early 80's model it sounds like you have a pulse coil on the way out Regards Jim
  24. OK Jay, remove the exhaust pipe and look up the exhaust port if it is D shaped and not round this will be the first point of restriction (not an easy job removing this one ur better off finding a 77 or older barrel). The junk the exhaust system and fit something else (an FS1E silencer will fit with mods to the front pipe). If the bike has the YEIS system make sure the big rubber tube is in good condition. If you find the bike struggles to change gear at the moment you may find a good decoke will put the top speed back to a blistering 33 mph ! Regards Jim
