  1. Hi Leigh, how many miles has the bike covered ? Regards Jim
  2. Hi Shokz how can you replace a single four stroke air cooled engine with a 2 stroke watercooled motor ? The logistics of mounting the Rad & 2 two stroke oil tank would require some serious adjustment .. I would guess there is a chance that a like engine (4 stroke or 2 stroke dependant) could be put into the said frame. Then with the YBR->DT exchange the ignition circut (cdi box etc) would cause problems as the ignition curve for both engines would be totally different. Regards Jim
  3. Hi Matt, first off the bike does not need a battery to start, the only wires you need to be concered with are the black/white thro the loom & main switch. It would be good to test for a spark using the following method :- 1) remove the spark plug 2) make sure the main switch is in the on position 3) put the plug into the cap and earth it against the cylinder/cylinder head 4) kick the motor over you should have a nice blue spark between the plug electrodes if not the following might help :- remove the plug & cap & push the ht lead between the cylinder fins & kick the bike over again .. if at this point you get a spark the cap and/or plug are suspect If no spark at this point, obtain a DTI and check that the points open @ 1.8mm btdc, the best method of doing this is to put a fag paper between the points and make sure that @1.8mm btdc the fag paper can be withdrawn with small resistance (the points are opening). If the above is correct then look at the carb, clean it out and make sure the internal drillings (holes) in the carb body /float chamber are clear. If it still refuses to start at this point you will need to to remove the the cylinder (or check the compression) to ensure this part of the engine is ok. Regards Jim

  6. Hi, perhaps it a point of getting old ? I have noticed (as I have got older) that you do get tingles from little 2 strokes that vibrate more than other styles/types of bike.... I'm not saying ur old but I would take this into account ..... I can hear loads of older people saying 'it doesn't happen to me' but I do notice this point after riding the FS1 for 30~40 miles where as if I do the same & more on the 900 I get no problem. Regards Jim
  7. Hi Wishmaster, I would guess those specs are 'good to go' as the bikes shared the same frame & cycle parts and only differed in the engine department via capacity/gearbox and aesthetic sections so you could be sound with that but to be sure PM Drewpy Regards Jim
  8. Hi, from what I can see the second part up is rubber section of the gasket and the two peice head had a real problem with that leak hence the later models having a one peice head. In future either use them or use google to search the part no you need.. Regards Jim
  9. Hi Leigh, since when ? have you altered the bike some how or when did the perfomance drop off ? Regards Jim
  10. Hi Paul, thanks for that I now have some of the specs I need Regards Jim
  11. How ? those 2 motors are so different ..... tell us how to do it Regards Jim

Hi, It could work but you would have to check that the mag taper is the same for both mags (I would guess it would be), then you would have to rewire the ignition system to suit the cdi. Next point would be a nice point to mount the cdi box but I guess under the seat (between the rear mudguard, air box & oil tank). What is wrong with the set of wheels you have ? Regards Jim
  13. Hi all Does anyone have the correct readouts for the coils, cdi & tps for a 1996 TDM 850 ? Also was there any factory mods done to the carbs Regards Jim
  14. Hi Wishmaster, what do you need to know ? Regards Jim
  15. I do hope it was your first ride on the bike seriously let us know what happens Regards Jim
  16. Hi , it spins at what sort of speed & when you do this test do you get the noise you describe ? Regards Jim
  17. Hi, The starter chain should be tensioned so at the mid point between the sprockets you have 2/3 mm movement to get this use the adjusters located under the l/h crankcase cover. Regards Jim
  18. Hi, I have spent some time trying to remember the 2 peice head design (last time I had one to bits must have in 78/79) I seem to remember the gaskit had a rubber section (looking at the pic this bears out) and this (the rubber bit) could not be home made dont forget you WILL NEED a service manual to pull the engine that far to bits and (again from memory) the engine does have to be removed from the frame in order to do it ( or was that the later bikes ). but these guys http://www.nwvintagecycleparts.com/search-...00&st=spart have two in stock at $31.78 each. They also have five oil filters http://www.nwvintagecycleparts.com/search-...&search.y=7 in stock @ $27.05 each hope this helps Regards Jim
  19. Hi, I would guess that to be the starter motor getting a bit hot ! & not the bike about to start. I still think you should do some basic checks to the engine & try and start it from the kick start. Statically check the ignition timming & point gap Check valve clearences if the bike is a non runner, remove the carbs ,strip & clean them, clean the fuel tank & tap out Check the plugs Check that you have a nice blue spark at the plugs. When you try to start the engine set the fuel tap to the PRI position and use the kick start. If the bike then starts and the fuse doesnt blow you have narrowed it down to a starter motor and/or starter relay Regards Jim
  20. or perhaps it some old base gaskit left onone of the faces ? Regards Jim
  21. Hi, I guess from the posts, your motor is the same as the UK one .. the rollers are unlikley to be damaged (along with the clutch) . I would guess you would need to look at the starter motor. Regards Jim
  22. Hi Drewps, perhaps I'll txt him !!!! Regards Jim

    Hot DT

Check for water in the float bowl .. to check the ignitoin timming get a DTI wind the motor back 1.8mm BTDC and the points should just open ... tbh gapping the points to a set figure at a set point will not work Regards Jim
  24. Hi Redbug2 can you translate :- I have an old XS400 that I parted out, still have the engine and the starting mechanism.... I would guess this means you have broken the bike and still have these parts on hand ? I would guess the rollers out of the starter clutch are not causing the problem, unless the whole lot is knackered, but of course models from a different country may be different. Regards Jim
  25. Hi Drewps, can we find the elusive the Mr I know nothing ... is he lurking in an area near you ? or perhaps he doesnt exist !! Regards Jim
