Hi, all - first post! :D

I'm hoping that someone can help with this, as its a case of fix or scrap :(

I've been left a Yamaha WHY 50 (YH50? Something like that anyways...) by my uncle when he died, and after riding it a few times, it seems to be woefully lacking in any power when pulling away from a dead stop. I almost got hit by a bus yesterday because it just plain stopped while pulling (up a 1/6-ish gradient) onto a roundabout...

The engine doesn't actually cut out or anything - it sits happily revving away, but you seem to have to help the scooter get over its own inetia Fred-Flintstone-style before the engine will take over. Its a little flying machine when it gets going, but that lack of power is a definately disturbing.

I've asked a few of his friends, and aparrently he had read about a modification you could do to the engine where by you would cut something shorter, and gain extra power... unfortunately he cut the wrong thing! I hate not being able to be more specific, but nobody has any more info, and its not as if i can ask him...

Does anyone have any ideas where i could start looking, or maybe even have heard of the mod that he did? Any ideas would be appreciated :)

Martin.

hi mate, have you looked at the drive belt and variator rollers? , also the drive clutch. any of these can cause your problems, they are relatively cheap to sort out too. the cuting part is prob cutting the restricter tube from the exhaust pipe,; its always worth changing the spark plug frequently too.. keep smiling!

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what exactly would i be checking on each of these?

I'm fine when it comes to car engines, but variator rollers and drive belts etc are alien concepts to me! :P

sorry im asuming your bike is a scooter?? if it is then the belt and rollers etc are all under the long cover on lh side of engine.rollers you should lok for flat spots , belt shoulld be checked for obvious wear and cracking, the clutch is basically like brake shoes they wear down and work less efficiently.
