only really matters if you have efi and a knock sensor, like most modern cars. This because the spark is advanced to the point knock is detected for max power. 98/99 work well on many modern cars.

On a bike running raised compression e.g. turbo or high-comp piston kits, it prevents detonation and spark-knock killing the engine. other than that why bother?
