1997 YZF 600r

Does the engine need to be completely disassembled to access the gearbox internals? I don't have the shop manual for this bike yet and was trying figure out how involved it's going to be to fix my 2nd gear problem. I'm pretty sure it's the dogs on the shift fork causing the gear not to engage.
