Posted September 15, 200717 yr New to this board (from Florida, USA), not new to motorcycles, but this has me stumped!! Just acquired what is supposed to be a 1982 Maxim 400. I've searched across the 'net and found pics and specs for a 1982 xs400 Maxim and they don't look anything at all like what I have. I found pics of a 1984 Maxim that looks exactly like what I have? The title shows the bike as a 1982. My question is: are there any rescources available that show the interpretation of the VIN number as to year manufactured, model, etc. I also have an xj650 Seca and I have a VIN reference for the XJ bikes. I've checked several Yamaha sites and can't even find "Maxim" listed as a Model. Any help from anyone familiar with "Maxim" models would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

ACTUALLY THE BIKE LOOKS LIKE THIS: http://thiensville.olx.com/1983-yamaha-400...400-iid-1759533 (Sorry but I haven't been able to figure out how to post a photo on this site as yet and its not allowing my to add this url as a link) Of course, this is a 1983 and that is what is confusing, not only does my title show the model year as a 1982, it also shows that it is a 1200cc??? That's why I'm trying to decipher the VIN number. I know which digit denotes the year manufactured (mine is a D) I'm just not sure what year the D stands for. Probably have to contact a Yamaha dealer. Its also very odd that that I've found xs400K, xs400L, xs400 Maxim, etc. but there seems to be no way of identifying which model is which. Thanks for your help....I'll post again if I ever get this straightened out.
September 18, 200717 yr Moderator Sounds like a screwy title Dennis Check the MFG date on the steeering head......if it's in the 1st 6 month's of '82.........then it should be an XS400 J. I don't think they offered that color of Red till '83?........I know the '82 Seca 400 only came in Blue but was offered in Red in '83........(from personal experience........did 40,000 miles on my Seca 400.

Thanks for your help. I think I've finally gotten it figured out. The VIN number identifies is as a 1983 (The D is for the year 1983). Also found out from PO that the title was originally screwed up by the Georgia DMV, they also showed it as a 1200 cc displacement motor. The MFG date is late 1982. Now if I can only figure out all the different Maxim models (R, RK, J, L, ETC.) maybe I'll really know what it is! Thanks again. Dennis J.
