I am new to riding a street bike and was wondering how often one should change the oil?

The dealer seems to think 5000 miles between oil changes it just fine? Any thoughts?

Also do most bikes burn oil and require topping off?

Yeah, oil change at 5000 miles is about right, and oil filter too.

Its the life blood of your machine.

Bike will burn off some oil over time so keep an eye on the level.

I change the oil and filter every 3000 miles.

Oil & Filter every 3000, Yam say every 6000 but it don't cost much to keep her fresh !

oil nd filter every 3000, better to be safe than sorry B) for all it costs, its worth it!!!!!!

The harder you ride the quicker the oil change. Also mineral oils require changing more often than chemical oil. The type of oil filter also makes a difference.

wht about first maintenance? that at 600 miles?

At 600 miles (or after 6 weeks - whichever comes sooner) the first service is due, oil and oil filter are changed I do believe, mine's coming up soon :)
