I bought this bike from a friend of mine...He barely rode it and for the past year and a half he hasn't started it. I went to go work on it yesterday and the engine will not kick over. i sprayed Starting Fluid in the Air Filter and she turned over for about 5 Seconds before shutting off. I feel like its a fuel issue. vaccum seemed good going from the engine to the fuel pump...however the flow from the fuel pump to the carbs seems week. it did not change when i tried to start the engine...the flow stayed constant, there was no "squirt" of the gas. before i go ripping off the fuel pump or the carbs, i want to know if anyone has had this experience with these bikes. the bike only has 3,400 miles on it! what is the most simple approach to troubleshoot this problem: 1. take off fuel pump - either get a new one or clean existing one (if possible) 2. clean carbs and see where she goes from there. thanks, any help or diagrams would be most appreciated Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

hanixjr Posted February 5, 2007 Author Share Posted February 5, 2007 its a 1996 yamaha xj600S seca II any help you can offer will be great.... i've had a couple different suggestions: 1. bypass the fuel filter and have the tank run directly to the carbs...if she runs then i know its the fuel filter. 2. remove the carbs and clean them...if problem still persists, then i know its the fuel filter... i want to use the best option for not screwing up the bike and i don't want to do repeat work! what is the simplest solution i can start with to find out what the problem is? again, when i sprayed either into the airbox, it ran for a couple seconds...when i did that do i really bypass the carbs? thanks for whatever help you can give me Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Willenium Posted February 6, 2007 Share Posted February 6, 2007 I'd begin by giving the carbs a good clean and replace the fuel filter. Clean the plugs up and make sure they're working properly. If it still doesn't start then give the fuel system some attention as the fuel pump could be gunked up from stale fuel. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
