julius Posted July 30, 2006 Posted July 30, 2006 Hi This is a problem that has the local Yammy dealer beat! I have asked for assistance from Yamaha Australia and they merely refered me back to the same dealer. I live in Darwin. The next nearest decent Yamaha workshop is in Adelaide, 2500kms away. A 1998 Diversion 900. No history of any problems. 70,000km on the clock put on by an older rider that used the bike in a stress free manner with most distances run out in the country. It started using a bit of oil so the dealer recommended new rings. The rings were put in and all seemed in order after reassembly. Starts and idles beautifully. No noticeable probs when the bike is used around town with gear changes at 3500rpm or under and less than 110km/hr on the highway But open the throttle just a bit more and here is where the problems started. The bike will not rev past 5500rpm in top gear. Feels as though it's flooding as backing off slightly will give a little spurt of power. Under hard acceleration power loss is eveident in any gear with rpm as low as 3000. The fuel consumption seems high but the dealer says it's running very lean on the dyno. The dealer has tried 3 times to find the problem. 3 separate tries at $88 per hour. Put it on the dyno, stripped the carbies, checked jets, fuel flow, throttle adjustment, timing and a few other things that I cann't remember. I have a cd of the worksop manual and the only thing I can think of is that when they put it back together they got the cam chain wrong and then fiddled with the timing to cover the mistake If anyone can diagnose this there is a bottle of Glenfiddich waiting. The only snag is you will have to come to Darwin to collect. Growing old disgracefully Julius
twlyons1 Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 I believe it is in the timing as well, more so the points, even if they are electronic,,,,,seems to act as when a vehicles distributor is out some-has power for a little bit but then all of a sudden as your accelorating it get rough and feel as if the brakes are on a bit holding you back and the gas gets consumed more and a loss of power,,,, I would retract the timing about 1 or 2 degrees or untill it almost dies and back just a bit, becareful because if this is the problem it will have a lot more power from the get go,,,, if your not quite shure what direction is retacting or advancing, try it one way and see how it does and then try it the other way..... I am familiar about shop practices, havn't worked in them but hung around enough and if the chain is off one tooth, they will try and adjust the timing till it clears up enough to go out the door and then when it comes back in,,,cha-ching , another 80 bucks an hour for them, there are other things shops do too but any ways, if you can see your points, clean them and possibly adjusted to far out but mostly timmmming. The drink sounds great how ever I could not be much farthur away, I believe both directions is about the same distence to you Hope I could help some, Oh, check for leaks around intakes and exaust at the head, good luck Hi This is a problem that has the local Yammy dealer beat!
