Posted October 8, 20168 yr Hi folks! A quick quezzie. I need a spare key for my ybr. I only have one and I anticipate losing it before long. What are my options? The local key cutter laughed me off! Cheers Dan
October 8, 20168 yr try another locksmiths someone should cut you one, I find the old school guys can't be arsed with foreign locks for whatever reason.
October 9, 20168 yr As above if one won't do it find someone else but is it just a straight key or one of those with a chip in it? If it has a chip then your going to have to get it from a specialist, my car has one of these and they are £90 a pop!
October 9, 20168 yr Author Truth is I'm not sure. It looks fairly straight with a thin black thumb grip about the size of a 2p. Like this Pic. What do you think? chip?
October 9, 20168 yr Moderator might be that the blanks are special, I had to buy a blank for my key cutter to use as he doesn't get those in any quantity http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorcycle-MOTORBIKE-Scooter-IGNITION-key-blank-with-blade-SUITABLE-Yamaha-M12-/181757444885?hash=item2a51968315:g:qA8AAOSwQItUFvf8 check the "scallops" on yours to see if they match the blank ones
October 10, 20168 yr Yeah it's just a standard key so should be available from any good locksmith, there's a chain of key cutters called "TIMPSON" they cut all my keys and costs around £4 a key.
October 10, 20168 yr Thompson's are expensive , They will not use blanks supplied by yourself, they only use there own , Go to a paki key cutters ,they are usually a lot cheaper. And that key in the photo isn't chipped so £2.50p should get you a new key.
October 10, 20168 yr Author Yup. Timpsons are EXPENSIVE. They were also the only place in Brighton (within walking distance from work) that did bike keys. it was £8! 2 for £12. Jeeezz it took the guy about 30 secs to do each one. What a rip off. Of course now I have spares I'm NEVER going to lose the original. Thanks for the advice peeps.
October 10, 20168 yr I paid £12 for two of them, thought it was reasonable. You have to remember that cutting a key is a very skilled job, requires very specific machinery, and add on the price of the key blank. You have two options, £6 per key, or pushing your bike home with the steering lock on.
