for some reason my haynes manual seems to ignore the fuel tap, leastways i really can't find anything on it -

this picture shows the fuel on apparently, thin part of indicator pointing up is reserve but what's prime exactly, something to do with being able to drain the tank please?

Think it can be used to drain the tank as turning it to PRI should allow fuel to drain using gravity rather than vacuum. (apparently it is for when the bike has been standing and carbs are completely dry)

Nope. Not standing at all. My TDR will need prime even after a couple of days or you will be kicking for ever till the bike starts.

A 3 count on prime. Pull choke and she's away.

Ey, as said above, Prime is to fill the carbs up after bike has been standing for any number of time, some might be a day or two some could last weeks. i normally only use the prime if i have had the carbs off and drained them but apart from that i just choke it and fire up.
