Robin B Posted August 21, 2015 Share Posted August 21, 2015 Hi All I rebuilt a 1980 250lc a couple of years ago and have had a couple of thousand trouble free miles. However, recently it has taken to not starting on the kick start. Up until this time it started first kick every time. Now it floods when it doesn't start on the first kick (it has always run a bit rich). Lights and indicators all work, but the neutral and oil light only come on when you kick the starter and the engine is running, not when the ignition is switched on. Exhaust leaks.Could be a few or all of the above. The 2str light and the neutral light say nothing but a bad battery. More detail needed.Plugs changed when? Checked the filter, plug caps? YPVSTony Posted August 21, 2015 Share Posted August 21, 2015 Regarding the cold starting, have you had the carbs apart recently ? A common issue on the LC-YPVS twins is when stripping the carbs is to get the float bowls mixed up and put on the wrong carbs. Although they look the same they are different. If you put them side by side and look at the inside you will see only one has a drilling for the choke jet. This one goes on the LH (choke side) carb and the one without the drilling goes on the RH carb. Also worth spraying some carb or contact cleaner down the drilling to make sure the choke jet is clear as these can gum up if stood for a time. Make sure you get the choke balance pipe connected between the carbs and oil lines connected to each carb. Regards the lights, as Cynic has said it sounds like a battery issue. Have you got a multimeter to check the DC volts across the battery terminals. Could be it just needs a charge using a bike charger. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Robin B Posted August 22, 2015 Author Share Posted August 22, 2015 Bugger, battery checked and charged, reading around 12.7 static charge so should be ok, but still not starting. Used to be so reliable on first kick so something's a miss. I am thinking the idiot lights and this not starting are linked, will have to trace the wiring and see what is happening.
