hey guys!

I just got an FJ1200, 1992, 46.000 miles, I ride it home 150 miles to home, is going very well but I have some problems with the clutch. I also plan to make her looking better (cleaning, paiting and if I can get the help of a friend, I will remove the engine to paint the frame). also I need to repair the fairings a bit.

Nice find Lassy, as Drewpy says just run it for the summer, the only real problem that I had with mine was the lower frame rails rotting out where they bolt to the engine through a rubber mounting, pain in the arse to get the bolts out. had to grind the bolt heads off and buy new ones. I have loads of bits left over from mine so if you want a part give me a shout.

Ooh, that's a bit messy... Engine looks good though and the rusty bits should be easy enough to tidy up.

But you're now one of us - You have a 1992 FJ1200 3XW, the exact same model and year as mine!!!

You've got the fancy screen on, though. Might want to replace those crappy mirrors for a pair off a Bandit 1250, though.

 

Coming from a Cruiser, you'll find it takes a while to get used to the riding position. Your back, shoulders and wrists may ache until you settle in. If you still have difficulty after a month of decent riding, consider risers - I'm still thinking about it even after a year.

Something else that might help are Grip Puppies - They cushion the grips and widen them, being more like the Cruiser you're used to.

If you find difficulty in selecting gears or an excessive clunk when dropping into first, this is the result of the seal losing the hydraulic pressure. First sign of  a problem is paint missing from the  oil filter housing as the hydraulic fluid leaks onto it and strips the paint off.
First option is simply replace the seal. If the problem returns in a short time then the answer is to replace the whole unit.

I always advocate joining the FJOC, as most of them will have owned this bike since they first came out and know chapter and verse on it (more than Yamaha, even), as well as being a good source for parts (OEM, Aftermarket, 2nd hand, etc). Heck, they got me a replacement back wheel + trye for free!!

Just noticed Lassy in photo number 3 Where's the frigging oil? It should be halfway up the sight glass is it on the side stand perhaps?

Nice find, same paint scheme as mine aswell!.

I've got an assortment of bits left over from the FJs i used to break, so let me know if theres anything you need.

is on side stand slice :)) the oil level is ok, need to put a bit more but is still ok ;) 

well foamy, if I fail to solve the problems with clutch slave seal kit, probably I will need another slave cylinder unit :)

you can still buy the clutch slave cylinder pistons brand new on their own, its usually when they get rusty and pitted that it chews the seal up and lets the air in.

ok guys, I need help, I try to use google translator but you don`t wan`t know how this translate those motorcycle stuffs :)) take me 30 min to figure out how is called in english the gasket :))

so first, tasky, I saw I have oil leak on the valve gasket (I think this is the correct name) is the rubber thing in H. I do a search for 1992 FJ1200 3XW but the ebay confuse me so I don`t know what exactly what I need. you say you have the same model, can you help me find out what gasket I need?

second is about painting, I buy some nitrocrap thing, I forget what is the name exactly :)) a paint striper. but I need find out the name of that thing is used before painting, is a base for painting, something like this... sometime this thing is white. there is also the same stuff for plastic but they are different. so, if anyone understand what I speak about, please help me find out how is called in english.

You need a "Valve cover gasket" plus don't forget the rubber "O" rings on the 8 bolts that go through the valve cover. These things 8x-YAMAHA-FJ1100-FJ1200-VMAX-XVZ12-FZR600-FZR1000-XJ700-VALVE-COVER-BOLT-SEALS

the o ring seems to be ok slice but the valve cover gasket, because of the heating has become in a corner more like a plastic. this is the gasket I speak about slice but I don`t know is is the same for all models, I see for some models on ebay but nothing about 3xw.

That will give you a gasket for your exact model mate. £37.58 is an about average price, if you join the FJ owners club it will be slightly less but you have to pay a joining fee which will make it more expensive. I would change the "O" rings as well cos if they haven't been done then they will leak eventually and you might as well do them while the cover is off now rather than wait till they do leak.

 

One other thing lassy when you change the oil filter be VERY careful NOT to trap the wire that runs below the oil filter housing in the groove that the oil filter housing sits in cos this will crack the housing and spill oil all over the floor, been there done that !!!

The H-shaped thing is officially a "Cam Cover Gasket", although may also be called a "Rocker Cover Gasket".

FJOC does them for £23. You will need the joining fee, but it's worth it if :

  • You expect to buy other parts throught the time you own this bike.
  • You require specialist assistance from the mechanics who know this bike the best.
  • You want access to the documentation on maintenance and servicing.
  • You need good condition 2nd hand parts.
