Question please. Previously (for 11yrs) I had a 1980 Yaaha XV750SE originally a Jap market one. Now I have a 1981 Yamaha XV750 but is it a SE or H? How to tell please. Log book does not say. It is from the USA. What is the difference between the models? Only difference I have seen is that my Jap market one had a red light come on at 50mph and a Kilo speedo. But thinking about when buying spares, anything to look out for?

Baby's nappy weather here in west Kent today, wet and windy. :spin2:

Found this on the net http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/yamaha/yamaha_xv750_virago%2081.htm

The only thing that's usually different between the USA ones and the UK ones is the lights are on when you turn the key for the US ones and you have to be able to turn the lights on yourself if it's a UK one, not really rocket science but there you go, so if yours has the US spec then the only thing I can think of that might be unusual is if you have to change the loom at any time you will need a US one not the UK version.

Other than that they are usually fairly standard across the range regardless of where they come from in the world, the Japanese ones might have a few extra mods than others due to the fact that they are built there.

PS just to say that the reason I say the loom will be different is that on my old XJ I had to use a UK loom as the fittings on the US ones were different, the plugs had more or less wires going to them and it was not possible to chop the old plugs off and use them.

If the lights come on automatically then I would say it's a US one but not absolute proof is it? How about you check with Yamaha UK they have all the info on all the bikes they ever produced and I have heard they are very good at helping out but sloooooow to send the info.

Imported from the land of the once mighty dollar in 1992 it says on the V5C. Also found spares for it more prolific the far side of the pond, though Fowlers have been helpful.

I will give Yamaha UK a try. Asked a similar question about a Honda and Honda UK were not interested.

The often much maligned Previous Owner, in this case seems to have taken good care of it. I have owned the XV since last August and just had to replace a few minor parts. Very pleased with it. Starts well, runs smooth, comfortable and (in my opinion) sounds great.
