hi all,

my dt250 only fires for about 2 seconds and cuts out

sometimes back fires when kicked

tries to start

plug is wet

any ideas are welcome

If plug is wet , its getting fuel,, but" how old is the fuel ? and renew spark plug,,,and see what happens

so tell us some history, what have you done recently...did is run ok yesterday...what did you do since????

year of bike is 1982

fuel is new so is plug and cap

not had it running for about 18 months

engine been out carb off

frame powder coated

I am thinking it might be reeds had a look at them and there is gaps in them

kicked over with carb off/plug out and can see fuel coming back from the reeds

this is my first project and not really used a forum before hoping to start a collection of dt's

Reeds are for better midrange power, and blow back,,, should not affect starting,, [ as a piston port engine has no reeds] ,

Back fire is fuel in exhaust igniting, does it run on choke? then die when off choke,

it fires for about 2 secs on choke as if it wants to start

with no choke, throttle needs to be open about a quart still about 2 secs

yes there is a lot of fuel in the exhaust

Take out plug , leave over night, clean plug and try to start without choke,, just to see,, is there a good spark,,

it started and revved twice and then cut out

could it have anything to do with the electrics as I have only put in together temporary

, Am shure its carburettor probs here, , The pilot jet must be choked,, is there an air filter on bike,,?

yeah sure it could easily have to do with the electrics, but with this problem a new plug is always the first port of call

yes there is a air filter but not had the rubber boot joint on so back of carb is open

it has a new plug and cap with the new plug this is when it revved twice and died

it needs the air filter coupled up correctly

Aha" do you not have the rubber connector, ? if you don't, and want to run it, tape off 3/4 of the carb orifice , with gaffer tape [ super tape] not thin stuff or it will suck it in,,,she should run,,

right all is put back correctly

left to stand over crimo

tried last night to start again

started for 2 secs and cut out

have noticed that the air screw on carb is all the way in ???

often they are set around 1 1/2 turns out, try that

would the idle screw have anything to do with it

if you can keep it going by 'feathering' the throttle, then yes the idle screw needs turning inwards a little
