mcferreira100
So needed some parts so picked this up for cheap. Interested in the exhaust for the XT250..engine cover for the XL185. Non runner but still got nice clocks and most things seem to be there..so will probably be a future project.

Moderator Airhead Posted November 5, 2014 Moderator Share Posted November 5, 2014 Like it. I remember the XLs as a twinshock bike with very angled shockers
mcferreira100
You`re talking about this guy..my 185S. So thought I wud see if the 125 wud start..as it is getting spark. So new plug in there (plug hole was just left open which explains all the water in there)..cleaned carb..plenty gunk in there. Drained oil and put new. (plenty water came out). But no joy..so guess it has no compression.
Moderator Airhead Posted November 11, 2014 Moderator Share Posted November 11, 2014 squirt a bit of oil in the cylinder you will gain some compression, maybe enough to start it
mcferreira100
Yep..I did squirt quite bit of oil in there and kicked it over plenty times to lubricate things. Also tried quickstart into carb intake.

mcferreira100
So decided to get bit stuck in and see if I can get this bike going. Bought this bike to use as a learning curve to repair a 4stroke engine. Engine out today. Hopefully talking set of rings and a hone. Will flush with some diesel for water ingress. mcferreira100
Remember this is first time I`m opening an engine so been going carefully, but stripping going ok so far. I can see its going to be fun getting all this back in place. Any opinions on how the parts are looking? To my inexperienced eye piston and rings actually look ok but bad pitting in the cylinder towards the top (result of water entry I would think). slice
Looks ok from the photos, if the pitting is only at the very top 1/4 of the bore then it should be ok, it's only if there is wear or pits below or at the rings you need to worry even then it usually can be alright as long as they are along the bore and not across it. Nice little project Mc.
