Nice looking bike Mc, perhaps he was using one of my fake spark plugs? Those scratches look pretty deep mate ask your local engineer if he can hone them out, would bet not tho, best to bore it and up a piston size, that way you know it will last.

Barrel off..looks like quite bit of crap in there. Have a feeling this engine should be split and cleaned properly.

Damn..bolt broke off when removing reeds

Spotted the thrust washer I was warned against can fall into casing 3 bikes ago. Fell out this time.

While I ponder what to do with my engine woes I`ll continue stripping.

Lower swingarm pivot to some heavy coaxing to get out. Wasn't much pivoting going on here.

One brake spring broken..just fell out which explains the noises I heard when spinning rear wheel.

By the way counted 22 balls on top and 19 on bottom so all bearings are there.

What is this bracket on the sidestand?..other DT`s don`t have it..it looks like an RD centrestand bracket. Is it original to the bike?

2014-10-30163503_zps09e0c7eb.jpg

Also had enough of too short sidestands so thinking of extending this one a little longer.

Looks like someone used a shorter spring so either made up a bracket or used one from something else, my best guess anyway, but Yamaha have been known to use the parts bin approach when it comes to finishing a bike run off.

Whew..this is the dirtiest one I`ve had yet.

You should meet some of my old girl friends you'll need more than a wire brush and a scraper :biglaugha:

  • 2 weeks later...

Almost done wire brushing and sanding on the frame..this must be the worst job on the bike.

Started doing some metal polishing. I normally just give all bolts and washers a lick of paint..but think will just polish everything this time.

Got primer on the frame today but not happy. Its a new primer I used, as my usual one was out of stock..this one has a resin base. As you can see the top coat is having some sorta reaction with it. Been fiddling all day and it looks like I`ll have to wet sand first coat down then it gets better..lots of extra work.

One side of front rim polished. Spokes are always a pain to try clean.

Wire wool and Brasso for the spokes Mc, much easier than trying to clean them with a brush or cloth.

Coming along nicely there mc

I've also noted....

Before and after pic the difference the metal polish makes to brake arm. Damn it comes out nice.

You've done such a good job of polishing the brake arm with the before and after photo that you've manged to polish a rear brake arm to make it look like a front brake arm in the after photo. :hah:
