Peter2ltr Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Hi guys looking for some a little help I recently bought a barn find dt 250 mono shock 1978! Its Been lying in a barn since 1997 Its white and seems complete and untouched Its frames a little rusty but plan on a total strip down! I wouldn't mind seeing if I could get it to start But at the moment it won't even spark The points look in good condition considering So does everything else behind the cover I had a poke about with a tester and the wire to the coil seem permanently earthed until I unplugged everything in the headlight! I didn't think this was normal I manage to pick up wiring diagram off google images it isn't very clear and there is different coloured wires than mine coming from the engine! Possible the diagram was for a early dt250 Is the a simple way of seeing if it will spark? Cheers guys Pete
blackhat250 Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Aye pete" disconnect the Black/white from ignition and then try,,, pop up a piccy of DT,,, i have Cd manuals of the DT250F . dont know if i scan load them ,,on here,,
Moderator Airhead Posted November 28, 2013 Moderator Posted November 28, 2013 the ignition key 'off' (and/or) the kill switch 'stop' will ground out the blk/wht wire to kill the ignition
Peter2ltr Posted November 28, 2013 Author Posted November 28, 2013 Aye! You sound like you speak my language blackhat250 ha ha! Wonder if you could email me that manual that would be a great help! How do you up load pictures on here?http://i.imgur.com/XB0yqUJl.jpg Black and white wire from the engine I take it you guys are speaking about! I have four wires black/white witch I take is the kill! Yellow witch I think is for lighting Green/white possibly the pulse wire? And light green witch I'm sure is for the neutral light The kill switch has been done away with no wires at all going to it? I also can't believe how many wires go to to the ignition switch on these things
blackhat250 Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 Its the black/white in headlight . goes to loom . i"l see if i can email , and see F.A.Q "s for upload pics,,,,
Peter2ltr Posted November 28, 2013 Author Posted November 28, 2013 Are my thoughts correct on the wires! I tried disconnecting the black/white still nothing! I put my on my meter on the green and white and when I turn the engine over by the flywheel the meter does jump now and then Also getting a reading on the yellow doing the same thing Can I run a wire from the engine loom to the coil? Scared to try it in case I fry something! Pete
Peter2ltr Posted November 28, 2013 Author Posted November 28, 2013 Sorry just realised your post after i posted mine I thought you ment the wire from the engine that's what I disconnected Also any tricks on pulling the flywheel with out a puller I have a puller but its a tad to small Pete
NE0 Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 I have a question:- if you're planning on a total strip down, How important is it to get it going? is it worth the risk or are you just trying to satisfy your curiosity? what will it prove.....especially when its been standing for a while. Have you put it new oil and cleaned the moving parts, because if you don't and you start it ......you might cause more problems. You're scared you might fry something, I'd be more concerned you might damage a few parts in your attempt. I'd forget it,............. just strip it properly, restore it and then start it.

Peter2ltr Posted November 28, 2013 Author Posted November 28, 2013 I see what your getting at neo but I basically want to see it spark more than anything! Make sure the looms doin it job and Isnt any under lying electrical problems before I start stripping it etc etc also I want to know what parts i need to be looking out for during the build Im not going to be trying to run it but I wouldn't mind seeing it spark Pete

I'm sure there's one on ebay at the moment Pete
Peter2ltr Posted November 30, 2013 Author Posted November 30, 2013 Well stripping is well underway! I have a friend of a friend who will shot blast and paint the frame for me! I don't like powder coating! Iv came across some things I'm wanting to ask! My seat base is rotten! What's my options if there are any? Original chain guard has also seen better days! Iv also having problems getting the swing arm Bolt out but my brother is going to give me a shot of his large copper mallet so I can give it a good hit. Also any of the engine to frame bolts going to give me any problems? Thanks pete
Moderator Airhead Posted November 30, 2013 Moderator Posted November 30, 2013 The swing arm bolt will rarely come out without sawing through it each side. However It's worth supporting the frame by placing a stout tube around the head of the bolt and resting this up against something solid (a wall) first.
Peter2ltr Posted November 30, 2013 Author Posted November 30, 2013 Oh I see! its going to be one of them bolts! Ha ha Thanks for the tip I'll give it a try Is it easy enough to get out the swing arm after cutting It out? I take it I would be a trip to my local fastener shop for a bolt would it! Pete
Moderator Airhead Posted November 30, 2013 Moderator Posted November 30, 2013 ...........I take it I would be a trip to my local fastener shop for a bolt would it! Pete Nahh mate you'll need to buy the real mc'coy from ebay or yamaha
