what way does the base gasket go pattern up or down??

Dosen't matter as long as it's not blocking anything and the dowel's fit.

Yep as long as the ports are open,if your bike has 2 dowels on the cylinder then it has to fit with the larger holes,,, if they are all the same size then just align it up with the cylinder base,hair spray woks well if you dont have gasket tack to keep it in place.
