welshwan Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 are you sure that the chain is actually slipping? once i had a push bike and if you had to put a lot of force on the pedals (going up a steep hill for example) it would feel like the chain had come off making my leg fly forward and my knee hit the bars. If i remember correctly it was something inside the thing, the bearing that lets you go down a hill without having to keep pedaling. that make any sense?

BillyBennett Posted August 14, 2013 Author Posted August 14, 2013 My bike has the 3 sprockets up front and 9 on back, but in the 3rd sprocket at front (the biggest one) all gears work fine, but in the second sprocket (the middle one) the gears slip on the back as you can feel it when peddling, like one time it's easier then the chain will slip into the gear above back into the low gear. My sprockets won't be work if it works in other gears?
Moderator Airhead Posted August 14, 2013 Moderator Posted August 14, 2013 I doubt it's chain and sprocket wear, try adjusting the cable you'll see an adjuster where the outer cable sheath meets the derailleur, try turning it anti clockwise 1/2 turn at a time (unscrewing) to take up and stretch that has occurred in the cable over time

AndrewElvisFan Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Lol! I had one of them about 20 years ago!!!! If its Shimano type gears then its most likely to be the slip bearing thing in the rear hub. Probably easier and quicker to get a new rear wheel.

AndrewElvisFan Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 And I've just read the rest of the thread - from memory there will be 2 small adjuster screws for fine tuning of the gears at the rear cantilever which moves the chain up and down the 9 sprockets

lallasro Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 first, I don`t know what is a sprocket but I guess is back pinions on a bicycle. you can put a new chain on the old sprockets, this is a problem just if the sprockets are really damaged. anyway your problem is on the middle I guess, sprocket 2. now, 8-9 sprockets casette need a special attention if you want your bike work perfectly. this is because of longer distance from 1 to 9. if you bike is builded on a boat in his way from china to UK, be sure will never work perfectly I supose your bike is a good one so first I will give you a link how to corectly adjust the gears. this is for rear sprockets and this is for front Be careful, maybe you will need adjust the derailleurs position up-down left-right! its very important!!! is hard for me to understand what exactly is your problem but If the problem is when you change from a sprocket to another, you need adjust the cabble. you have a adjusting ring somewhere. the screws is for the course limit, left or right. Campaman Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 To try adjusting first you need to put it onto the middle ring at the front then make sure there is no slack in the gear cable, then adjust the rear derailleur using the two small screws to set the upper and lower limit. Assuming you have an indexed shifter? this should fix you up in all the front sprockets. If not it could be that the actual shifter on the bars needs sorting or as said you need a new rear cassette.
