DT175MX Magneto Upgrade/ Replacement

I finally got round to working on my DT175MX after it being sat for 3.5 years. Dusty and neglected, it needed some TLC!

Having bought a few new parts, I set about fitting some of them onto the bike. I also began to check and clean other items that had been sat as I wanted a blast on it. I knew it hadn't seized as I had managed to kick it over a few times in the past.

I took the carb off, gave it a good clean out and put it back together. Then I set about putting fresh fuel into the tank. After a lot of kicks, the number I can't remember, it fired up. Stalled and fired up again. Eventually I got it running longer than a few seconds, every gear change it made, it wanted to lift the front wheel off the ground.

One big cheesy grin on my face and a sore right leg later I began to have an idea in my head of a Magneto Upgrade, Spark plug upgrade, grooved brake shoes and many more wacky ideas. I've found a company on the internet that does Power dynamo upgrades and was wondering if anyone else had modified their old machine with this before? They are pricey but are they worth it?

Not only not worth the cost but what ya going to doo 10 years from now when they stop making them and it's broken,personaly I would stick with what works KISS theroy and not mess with it.

Well today I bought an iridium NGK spark plug for the Beast. I hope that helps towards the starting and running of my machine! Maybe it'll get all these daft ideas of modding for the hell of it, out of my head for now!

The type magnetos used on these bikes are actually very good (both Cdi and points versions). in fact for a 2 stroke its very difficult to improve on what you have fitted.

All the parts are repairable (we can look at CDi units if they give up the ghost). The charging can easily be upgraded too.

I'd leave it well alone.

As already mentioned if PVL stop making the parts (and they do as we get sent PVL generators for repair that the factory no longer makes the parts for) then what are you going to do? Go back to the original as you'll still be able to get parts! :eusa_doh:

One thing that is worth doing is ensuring there is a good connection between the wiring loom/engine/frame. Don't assume the engine mounts will do this. There should be an actual wire on the back plate of the magneto to ensure a good earth return. Without a good earth the ignition performance will be down.

I said yesterday that I bought a new NGK Iridium Spark Plug for my DT. An upgrade from the standard one! Since my last post, I have found a few more possibilities to use. A Pulstar Pulse Spark plug, a Denso Iridium etc etc, I could go on with brands and types! What is the best (the Top Gun of Spark Plugs) type that people are using on their machines?

Before you get too carried away bear in mind Dt175s suffer badly with combustion chamber temperature. The bloody ethanol being added to fuel doesent help either. You want to stay under 7k for anything more than overtakes and such.

Even moderate work risks the piston. Fuel mixture and lubrication becomes critical real fast if you try tuning. I have tried most of it over the last 25 years.

Intake system (from a late model bike) in good nick. A good pipe and well set ig timing with sensible gearing for a 70 to 75 max at the red line will give really good results.

As far as plugs go the stock ones are fine.

We use NGK as I've never had a problem in competition or road on many bikes - DTs, ITs, YZs, TZ racing bikes, Kawasaki triples........I could go on :spin2:

We can get racing plugs but they will be hard on a stock motor - a simple Iridium will work well.
