I have read that all viragos whine when lifting off.

Dropped the oil and clean as a whistle, no nasty filings at all.

Garage happy and said its down to the gears having no play so just ride.

Can anyone confirm this?

A lot of Yamaha's have a gearbox whine especially the shaft drive models.

Yup, I have the whine on my 750 too. It is quite normal for the Virago it is shaft drive after all. Had me worried at first too.

It goes back as far as the TR1 (forerunner of the Virago). My gears whine going up and down

so seems nothing to be overly concerned with.
