ok ladles and Jelly spoons, I have a 97 P reg XVS 650 and lots of the plastic chrome is cracked, pitted or nasty, is the 97 bike specific? or will the chrome cover panels from a newer model fit?

Newer models *should* fit... Never heard anyone having problems otherwise.

I know someone round our way, who's breaking a '99 to do up an '00 Draggie. Likely he'll have chromey bits in reasonable (ie used, but good).

Not sure when they'll be available, but likely fairly soon.

you'll find on most searchs for xvs parts the 97 is never mentioned

the years seem to start from 98 onwards

not to worry this was only because in 98 the classic came out and thay had to differentiate between the both classic and custom

the parts for a 98 custom will fit a 97 custom as there is no difference whatsoever

I've just rebuilt a 97 650 and i can tell you that as far as differences go the wiring harness is different from the 98 onwards witch caused me a lot of hassle.
