Posted May 26, 201311 yr Hi Everyone, I have had this bike since i was a kid. It has been sitting in my dad's shed for about 10 years now. I got my licence last week and want to fix it up so that I can use it to get to work. I got it started the other day and it blew a lot of smoke for about 5min (hardly any smoke after that). It then cut out and would not idle or start without the choke outt. I flushed out the tank, pulled apart and cleaned the carby (it does not have any major marks on the internals (the "O" ring on the air mixer has a small chunk out of it). I was getting alot of fuel leaking out of the overflow pipe, but readjusted the float and it is not doing it as much now. Also have a brand new air filter that has been oiled plus put new rings on the piston. So. It will start with the choke but then slowly cuts out. If I add throttle, it stops straight away. One out of 12 times I can get it to run and use the throttle and rev it to the top. I have seated the air screw and then turned it out 1.5 turns (as the service manual says) & played with the idle screw. None of that seems to make mutch of a difference though. I have put alot of hours in respraying and cleaning up the bike and can't wait to get it on the road. Awaiting your knowledgable replies.
May 26, 201311 yr Moderator it sounds like a possible blocked pilot jet to me, i suggest a total strip of the carb though with it sitting for so long, best option is to have all of it ultrasonic cleaned, failing that buy a carb clean aerosol and spray through all carb passageways with it...keep it away from rubberised items though
May 27, 201311 yr Author Ok. I cleaned the carb and it is idling well. But cuts out once it gets hot. I think I have an overheating problem. Once it has cooled down it seems to run fine again. Any suggestions?
May 30, 201311 yr Author Hi Guys. Bike is runnning well now until i try and give it some gas in first gear. I can get it into second but it will only run on idle. I have let it run for a while and taken it for a soft run in first but it will not improve. Can anyone help me on this?
June 2, 201311 yr Author Was the same with the choke out. Had a few dramas with it today. It has seemed to work itself out! Took it for a little spin and is getting better each time. Now just have to take my front forks apart to change the oil seals. Does anyone know what size T-Handle is needed to hold onto the damper rod on the inside of the tube?
June 2, 201311 yr Moderator we never got that updated model here in Europe, by 1984 we had moved on to LC's so on the model we did get...there is no need for said T handle, we just unscrew the allen screw out of the bottom of each fork leg
June 2, 201311 yr Author Thanks Airhead for all of your help. When I turn the allen screw, the damper rod also turns. Will just go and buy a set of T-Handles and hope for the best
June 2, 201311 yr Moderator is there a drain screw at the bottom of the fork leg, on the outside of each leg? if so...get a long screw that fits and grind the end to a point then screw it in until it hits the taper spindle and 'nip it up' this may get a hold of the thing while you undo the bottom allen key
June 3, 201311 yr Author Yes there are . That sounds like a great idea. Thanks! Let you know how it goes.
June 3, 201311 yr Author Still trying to find a screw with the same thread. One thing I noticed while playing around is there is oil coming out of the exhaust. If I hold my hand near the end of it and then give it a rev, it will easily cover my palm in oil. I am under the assumption that this should not happen. Would that be correct?
June 3, 201311 yr Moderator most likely an m5 thread dont worry about the oil, the bike is cold...hasnt been run much...so its a bit premature to be doubting it, they ayways emit more oil / smoke briefly when cold
June 17, 201311 yr Author I am taking the forks to a local mechanic tomorrow because I want to make sure it is done right. The bike is running alright once I get it warmed up. But when I first kick it over I have to rock the bike back and forth to keep it going. Could it be the fuel level?Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
