Calum122
So very small update. Paid and bought for a VHSA Flat slide carburrettor 32mm. It's actually in very good shape for its year. Surface damage to the carb. Internals are semi good. The floats have a bit of corrosion on them. Nothing major. Will get round to replacing that. The slide chamber is good. Few signs of wear but nothing extreme. Definitely useable on the whole! This photo was before I cleaned it. Haven't got one of after. Expect I probably will take one once it goes in the engine. Use some 'Professional Carb Cleaner'. Actually did a nice job at removing grime. Then I found this in the cupboard lmao! I think I need a bigger one but I broke the carb down and cleaned it all up. Looking good now. Also managed to get a 4DL inlet manifold which obviously can take the bigger carb. So pleased about that. Cost about £100 in total for the carb and the inlet and cage. Will strip the cage down and fit carbon reeds into it. DT is running out of its nine lives. This month I HAVE to get that 3MB00P barrel rebored and fitted to the standard engine. I start a new job next month and can't have the DT top end going. So I'm going to rinse the bars and get the standard engine back to perfect health. So the tuned barrel will be on until I get the 4FU tuned and the 4DL repaired. As of now this thread will be dead until some real progress is made. Moderator Cynic Posted August 9, 2013 Moderator Share Posted August 9, 2013 Keep it up. Most dt tuning stories are depressingly uninspired. Yours is a real treat. Subtle but very much sympathetically modified to improve the bike as a whole. Well excecuted too. I have always wondered if a LH barrel from a tzr 250 would work? Looks close. j0hn
Wow dude, those SuMo wheels looks awesome! Can't comprehend the level of work you've done here, feels like I've just stuck stickers on my WR project compared to yours lol. Great work, definitely should go for a sexy rear fender . Calum122
Cheers dude. It's taken blood sweat and tears that's for sure! Months and months without a bike but boi oh boi is she sweet to ride! Yeah I'm game for any ideas you may throw at me. But the problem with the DTRE is that the panels all intertwine with each other. I personally I don't think the rear is too bad. At the moment (where it got nicked) it's cracked and damaged. But once I've bought a new one I'll put some subtle decals on it. Should spruse it up a little. I'm always game for ideas. Hell my bike is just a collection of stolen ideas anyway! The idea for the wheels came from my old bike BUT I have seen someone do something I WOULD HAVE LOVE TO HAVE DONE. Maybe on the next project. But he's used The Aprilia AF1 Futura Swingarm and wheels. A single swing arm DT. DAMN IT looks sweet. Hasn't completed it but I sure would have by now
Calum122
Been pretty slow going on this project. Not that many people are watching it. Too busy going out taking pictures... Haven't worked on the bike. But have been working on the TZR engine. Buying all the bits before I completely dismantle it is taking time. Almost there though, just need the motivation and the free time to sort it out.

Calum122
Will try and get more done on the run up to christmas. Hopefully will have more spare time. Not so much on the money side of things done. Luckily not much needs buying now. All the bearings bought just need the crank rebuilt.

Calum122
They're wicked. It annoys me when some nobody tags over the top of them lol. Yeah, it's taking every penny of mine to build though lol. Let alone time. Need to get my final part of my bike license done and looking to do a dual rad setup. Calum122
Just an update Engines split. Just needs cleaning. Spraying and rebuilding. Should be a few weeks yet. Will then need to figure out what I intend to do about the top end.#
j0hn
You've got balls dude! Must be a pretty great feeling to open up an engine like that and put it all back together . You going to stick a new headlight on that? I'm not really a fan of the old box style lol.
Noise
Looking good! should be a fun little bike once its finished. Best feeling in the world John once it fires up for the first time, most of it is billy basic easy but the rest is a head fuck with a sledge hammer but with a good oily hayne manwell its do-able
dt502001
While you have the tranny out check all the engaugment dogs and engauge windows in the mating gears, particulary 1-2-3. also I can see free HP and a faster reving eng by removing the counter ballance shaft. Calum122
Haha. Nah keeping the headlight. It's not the old shape. It's the last DTR shape headlight. Personally I like it and then it's the question what do you want out of the headlight. Decent visability or decent looks. If I only used the bike in the summer and only during the day then that question answers itself. But unfortunately it's an everyday bike and thus needs a good light source. May consider aftermarket light in the distant future though. Fancy one of those angel light ones lol. Audi style I haven't examined the gearbox yet. I will have a good look though. Even though I have no idea what it is I'll be looking for. Went to Yamaha and the guy there said he dropped his gearbox into this tank full of small bb's that vibrates all day and night. He reckons it's made the world of difference to the gearbox on his TZ250. Expensive though. I've placed an order for a Zeeltronic ignition system Doubt I'll fit it to the DTR engine. But it's intention is for the TZR motor. It will come with a Powervalve controller too! Cheers for your input guys. Was beginning to think it wasn't getting viewed lmao! And about braveness, not really. It's a spare engine. If I really struggle that much. I'll take the box of bits to Yamaha and have them rebuild it. But it's actually surprisingly simple inside. A few cogs and bearings. Nothing major.
Calum122
Sweet. Got the crank back today. Very pleased with the price to rebuild it. £20 at a Yamaha Dealership. What a bargain! Technician said that the crank didn't have too much life left in to it due to some scores to the big end eye. The bearing was about to spin :\ All done now. Needed to machine down the wossner connecting rod since there are no aftermarket belgarda con rods. But jobs a goodun and i'm well pleased. Saves me scrapping an okay crank. Calum122
Okay. It's been a long ass while but finished work for the rest of the year now so have spare time to crack on. I've been worried about this part for a while not....not sure why? It was surprisingly easy and satisfying. Can't say whether it works or not. It seems to select gears and the crank rotates. So that's some. I genuinely thought it would take longer to do this than it has. Just followed the Haynes manual and working through it slowly and carefully. Seems legit. I only stopped because I actually have reached the point whereby I'm putting it back together but don't have all the new shiny bits for it yet. So that's new. Nuff the talk here's some pictures. Gently tapped the rebuilt crank in. I have been so worried about this part ^^^^^^^^ Wondering how I'm every going to put that back together. Well I cable tied the gears together BEFORE I TOOK THEM OUT. Seemed to work a charm. They dropped straight in no problems. Then the forks... well that was a little tricky to get my head round cause I for got to take photos but Haynes explained it very well. THANK GOD! Getting these little bastards in took me a while to realise that you need to remove the support first then put it back in once you're happy with it. Advice on how tight those crankcase bolts should be? My torque wrench doesn't go down that low. So I just did them fairly tight but not too tight? Bit worried about that actually. So here's where I'm at so far. Want to put carbon reeds in there before I put the inlet back on. So will have to wait. Also want to put a new clutch in there as well. So need to order one of those. Will try and finish the majority of this off this weekend. Then it'll be the interesting stuff. Need to take the cylinder off my bike. Send it to a tuning specialist. get some sexy work done to it. Back it on this bottom end. Sort the carb out. Got the VHSA 32mm Delorto (4DL Carb). Sort out my Zeeltronic. Run it in then Boom. Summer tears! I'm thinking of running it in using the 4DL cdi first. Then switch to the Zeeltronic. Got a pre 96 airboot new from Yammy. This will be heated up so it can take the bigger carb I have already got one but it's startin to perish. Calum122
Cheers mate. Would have finished it off today but forgot to buy tab washers to put the primary drive gears back on :~( And they can only get them ordered for like 1st January .Ah well. Always next year haha! Will try and get as much as I can done now. Got to put a kickstart on this TZR yet. Luckily already bought so can fit that. Generator needs puttng on. Got plenty to keep me busy. Bought new clutch plates and springs. And carbon reeds. Just want this to be a brand new engine for when it comes on the road
