What year is my YZF 250...?

Hi all, had a YZF 250 for a few years now and only now thought of questioning whether it was sold to me correctly as a 2005 model (I have my doubts). It was my first serious motocross bike and I was "young and naïve..." so I didn't look thoroughly enough for the tell tale signs of just how to make sure you are getting what you have been advertised. I'm hoping someone on here can identify the bike year, I have my suspicions it is actually a 2003 model after some google searches, but where better to ask for proof than on the Yamaha Owners forum!! Regardless of age, I really enjoy riding it, I'd just prefer to know exactly what I have :) Any advice, info would be appreciated. PS it does need some TLC so not too many sniggers please! :P

I don't need to buy anything crucial at the moment, but I would like to do some upgrades when I rebuild it at the end of this year (it's a bit rusty in places as you can see) so I would need to know which year it is to select the correct things I would like to buy.

Just run the frame # through a dealer they can tell you quick. As far as parts 2002-10 same valves ,piston,gaskets,ect cams differ but any year will work,wr cams will give more bottom-mid power.

Dosn't look like you have done much service to the bike you should check the valve clearence ASAP,if the bike has 100hrs since it's last topend rebuild it needs to be done and you wil be looking at a 1000.00 min if the cylinder needs replating then add 300.

These are race eng and must be treated as such,, neglecting it will cost you LARGE to the tune of 3000.00 when a valve drops and they do break quite easy.

Thanks for the info dt50, it is much appreciated. I have been carrying out routine maintenance, such as oil/filter changes and I have also been regularly checking the valve clearance. I was warned before I bought the bike that the tolerances are small as it is a racing spec bike, so thankfully I have been trying to keep on top of the basics. As for the cylinder lining, I've never had the full head off to inspect or rebuild it, so it's probably something I should do in that case. I don't race the bike, just trail riding and recreational MX at the local track but I'm never putting it through its paces and thrashing it the way more serious racers would, so I imagine that stands in my favour. What do you think?

So basicaly what your sayin is you have no idea when the last rebuild was right?And you have put a 100hrs on it

If thats the case then you better open it up and check everything the service intervals are check and replace as nessary ever 600 miles or fifth race.That includes

Valve clearence every 3rd race,, stem and seat every 5th,springs,lifters,cams,timming chain and sprockets.

Piston check every 5th race for cracks -replace rings

new head gasket every 5th race.

re tighten rotor nut every 5th

crank and bearings inspect every 5th

transmission bearings 5th

The list goes on but this is straight from the yamaha service manual as you can see they don't expect it to run long before something will give up even if you not racing 600 miles is 600 miles of wear and tear. My wr has a tripmeter that suprise only goes to 999kms ( 600miles) so basicaly rebuild set to 0 and rebuild when it rolls over to 0 again.

So it's upto you ride it hope it dosen't blow up or service it and know all is good.

Yeah, you're right - I doubt I have put 100 hrs on it as I very rarely get the chance to take it out but having said that I don't know when the last rebuild would have been before I bought it and as you say - better safe than sorry. So I'll open it up before it goes out again, thanks again for the info!

Wow seems very expensive even if you do the work yourself the parts will cost a bit.

Well like they say it cost 10x to build a bike from parts then to buy new assembled,thats why old dirt bikes are cheap.

You were going to do it later this year just the time frame got moved up not the cost.
