just purchased this bike as my first big one.

The owners manual provides a nice flowchart that would suggest that the oil light indicator will come on after starting the engine, but not before. then electricals and oil levels are ok and it is safe to ride on...

The oil level is ok at rest, on the main stand etc... but the oil light takes a minute or two to come on after starting the vehicle. Is this then normal to ride around with the oil level indicator light lit on all the time?

I think you will find that the oil level warning light should only come on as a system check when you have the ignition on and when you push the start button. Once started the light should go out and stay out unless of course the oil level is low. Do you know when the oil was last changed ? or it could be a sticking or faulty oil level switch.
