Hi All,

I'm going to do the unthinkable (for me) and with the help of a clued-up mate, change the oil and filter on my 1998 Thunder Cat.

I've had a look on ebay, and was wondering which materials to use. Should i go for K+N oil filter, a 'regular' oil filter, or a Yamaha filter?

Also, which oil do you guys recommended?

Many thanks,

Steve

Thanks a lot, Kearnsey!

Did you buy a fresh O ring seal for the oil filter or use the one that came off? Is that a speacialist part?

Don't forget to smear your new O.ring with oil before you replace the new filter.

New oil filters come with new o rings

Maybe for certain models. Mine don't.

However, always buy a new crush washer for the sump plug.

Thats strange Task every filter even the cheape ones here come with a new O ring, oops forgot did have to buy 1 with a YAMAHA filter, but that aside every aftermarket does, had a boss once who charged for the o ring but it still came in the box with the new filter.

If you forgot to get a new crush washer and it's copper just heat it red hot and re use ,i'm still using the orignal 1's on the wr that it came with there are 3 drain plugs on it never had a leak.

My o-ring doesn't attach to the filter itself, per-se. The filter does have a flat rubber ring already stuck onto it, but the actual o-ring goes in a separate groove around the filter socket. Hence having to be careful when changing it that absolutely NO grit is anywhere near it, no matter how hard it is to see.

Otherwise, you get a gap, the hot oil melts the seal and your engine lubing fluid pisses out halfway down the motorway, resulting in a fucked engine all because a 2p bit of rubber was slightly gritty.

I know what type of filter housing your talking about task but yep they come in the box here always have,I would never reuse a old oring, and I always pre wash the area befor removing the old, never had a filter leak on me from my instalation,

However I took my Bandit in for it's first check-up ( for warenty) at 1000 kms and the dealer put the wrong filter on my bike, Fuck was I pissed cover in oil from the waist down and then some, long story short I had the right 1 at home fixed myself. I eventualy got fully compensated from the dealer for drycleaning and full refund for the service after alot of bitching and a letter to suzi canada.
