Hi guys, new to the page, new to yamas and new to motorcycling in general... now that my noobiness is out of the way, i need some help. i am 6 ft 2 275 lbs, and i was wondering what a good first ride would be. i was looking at a 250 ninja but they are just so small (and a kawasaki...), until an older yamaha fz600 caught my eye... i was just seeing if i could get input from you guys, and maybe get a decision on a motorcycle. i dont want a buttload of speed right away, because i want to learn first,so is a 600cc the right choice or should i stick with a 250/maybe 400cc??? any help is appreciated!!!

ninerz id say go for the 600,i never rode a bike in my life when i bought my 600,i brought it home on saturday night and practiced coming out of first gear in the driveway, woke up sunday and was determined to ride it, i taught MYSELF that day went around the block up and down the street learned the gears learned downshifting and that same day i rode to daytona for the last day of bikeweek which was 45 minutes from my house,it was the best feeling i ever had in my life, and even got her up to 100 on the way there,id say the best motto is be fearless but respectful.

I have an FZ600...its a great bike to start on....its docile (you can tune the hell out of it though and take it to the track)....its light.....its UNBELIEVABLY manueverable.....I will never get rid of mine......

let me know if you have questions about it

  • 1 year later...

Guess this is all pretty academic as the post was from about 18 months ago, Perhaps this will be of assistance to someone else like me...

I live in the UK and although 275 lbs doesn't make much sense to me... It sounds kinda "rotund" :-)

I think I would be my perfect weight if I was say another foot taller... suffice to say that I'm 6'0" and 18st 7lbs...

I just had my R6 (2006) delivered today following passing my bike test here in the UK a week or so ago...

Am I mad picking such a bike to effectively learn on? From the outside probably, but it seemed a logical step, I didn't want anything smaller than a 600 and I wanted something that was fun!!! Its been really windy today which did kinda scare the crap out of me getting pushed around but the R6 is bloody marvelous!!! The response to me is phenominal, the size of the frame is just about right. Any smaller and I could end up looking like I was on a mini moto... Anything less to me than a 600 esp. after learning on a ER-5 just didn't seem as if it would provide the fun I was looking for...

The great thing that I found out today is that even though its a true sportsbike ( and I am running it in ) you can poddle around on it quite easily, even the slow control supprised me, I expected it to be a bit of a handful at slow speeds... (typical newbie?)

The book said "no more than 8500 rpm for 1000 miles"..... I was doing 4500 rpm ish and eased off when I reached 87mph!

I was looking at a SV650S until I got an insurance quote for the R6 (thinking it would cost a mint) but it came in at a reasonable amount, really competative to the SV, so it was a no brainer for me really...

So I guess the point I'm tryng to make is even a tubby git like me can ride a R6... albeit slowly for the moment.... it has. "Grinability!"

Besides, you can't eat on a bike and there aren't any ash trays so all in all I should start loosing weight so I should only have to grow 6" and not 12" !

Happy days!
