1989 xj900 flat spot

has anyone else have an xj900 pre diversion, which experiences a flat spot between 3000 and 4000 revs?

the carbs are balanced, and the the only way to alleviate the symptons are to turn the mixture screws out to 31/2 turns instead of 21/2 . can anybody help
