yamrider2293 Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Hello. I have a 1981 Yamaha xt250. I recently took the motor apart and done some work to it then I put everything back together. I done the timing perfect. Adjusted the valves at the right specs done everything right. But now for some reason when you start it,it kicks back really hard and it starts but runs pretty weird. Its like everything is moving to advanced and I tried everything to fix it but nothing is working. If can can help me I would really appreciate it. Thanks. Robert.
Moderator Airhead Posted July 10, 2012 Moderator Posted July 10, 2012 sounds like advanced ignition timing doesnt it Robert? is it a bike with CDI or points ignition?
yamrider2293 Posted July 10, 2012 Author Posted July 10, 2012 I thought it could be that but I don't know much about all that. And yes it is cdi ignition
Moderator Airhead Posted July 10, 2012 Moderator Posted July 10, 2012 try and get a manual for it and check the ignition timing settings, however until then you may see some marks on the ignition stator and the engine case that should align?...just a guess though I am not familiar with the bike
yamrider2293 Posted July 10, 2012 Author Posted July 10, 2012 Okay. I actually just took the magneto off and seen that it was actually to advanced. So I'm gonna see if anything changes. Thanks for the help.
Moderator Airhead Posted July 10, 2012 Moderator Posted July 10, 2012 wow that was quick, dont forget to torque up the magneto bolt/nut tight on re-assembly, its common to find people just tightening these things 'best they can' only to end up with a sheared woodruff key later!!!
yamrider2293 Posted July 10, 2012 Author Posted July 10, 2012 I will be sure to do that. I've made that mistake once before and will never do that again.
Moderator Airhead Posted July 10, 2012 Moderator Posted July 10, 2012 OK Rob let us know how you get on and once again...buy/get a manual if you can
yamrider2293 Posted July 13, 2012 Author Posted July 13, 2012 So after fixing one problem, the kick start is still kicking back. My dad was a motorcycle mechanic for 12 years and he has no clue. Timing is perfect. Valves perfect. New c.d.I. we went threw everything. Its supposed to fire a little before tdc but its firing to soon. And you cannot change the spark or anything. I am lost? Its becoming a headache.
Moderator Airhead Posted July 13, 2012 Moderator Posted July 13, 2012 cant see how this is possible...given The ignition timing is spot on The rotor woodruff key is fitted and intact Have you used the bike previous to this?
yamrider2293 Posted July 13, 2012 Author Posted July 13, 2012 Yes I did. I'd go and ride every weekend and it ran amazing. Until one say I was riding and stopped at a friends house and went back to start it and then that's when it started kicking back. My dad said the only other thing he could think of is the decompression cable is not hooked up. So I'm gonna hook that up and give it a go and see how it works.
yamrider2293 Posted July 13, 2012 Author Posted July 13, 2012 Okay so I was online doing a little bit of research and I came across and article about a man who had the same bike and same exact problems as line. And he goes threw his steps to find whats wrong and he finally found he had hooked to wires up wrong. And he switched them and it was fixed. So I did the same and it runs like a top. Went threw all that and come to find out its something so simple.
Moderator Airhead Posted July 13, 2012 Moderator Posted July 13, 2012 Great news, arent they colour coded though...or didnt you have your specs on
yamrider2293 Posted July 14, 2012 Author Posted July 14, 2012 Yeah they were. But I'm literally color blind and couldn't tell which was which. I can only see bright colors. So I had the white and Greene wires wrong.
Moderator Airhead Posted July 14, 2012 Moderator Posted July 14, 2012 Yeah they were. But I'm literally color blind and couldn't tell which was which. I can only see bright colors. So I had the white and Greene wires wrong. y'know, for all the years i've been on here i've never come across that one yeah easily done in your case but i must say that since you are colour blind you might have used a 'witness' to verify your CDI connections?
yamrider2293 Posted July 14, 2012 Author Posted July 14, 2012 Yeah that probably would have helped out a lot. But I'm just happy its over with and I can actually ride again.
