1979 XS 750 Special-Engine Oil

I bought an 1979 XS 750 Special for a "starter bike." I rode it home and the oil appears to be low (can't see it in the window), but it is dawn so maybe I will see the oil line when the sun is shining tomorrow.

If it does need engine oil, what oil should I use for this model?
