I know what you mean, I don't like having to listen, to see if I'm revving the balls off her, I'd rather know what revs im doing than having to guess, you'll know when youve hit the limiter, but floating just underneath it aint too good.

I chose to fit a gear indicator but as it is electronic rather than mechanical (I had a mechanical one from Ledgear on my TDM) it doesn't always tell you the truth.

I'd say clip a tacho onto the bars either side of the display. When you do this let us know type and wiring.

You can install a tachometer on the 1300... I think Barons and Cobra make them? You can probably find some info here on how to install: http://1300tourer.com/search/node/tachometer

I have got into the habbit of riding to the feel/sound of the bike and dropping a gear for the bends. You'll probably find you can ride one gear down on what you think with 5th being an 'overdrive' gear

You might find this useful: http://www.650ccnd.com/calc.htm

Works on any bike too if you input the correct gear ratios. I've made a table (ok an excel spreadsheet) of rpms in 5th for 30 to 100 mph in 10m increments. Now I just have to memorise it! :D

I've even toyed with a theoretical 6th gear to see what the ratio would have to be to cruise along at 70 at 3500rpm! I have way too much time on my hands!
