1980MX
Hey all and thanks for looking! Im in some need of some help with a 1980 MX 175. The story goes, the previous owner ran it and loved it, but then the premix pump when out and he burned the rings/Sleeve. So its been sitting in a storage unit the last couple years. Theres also a couple mm's of play in the connecting rod at the crank, and he's not sure whats acceptable. He seemed to know what he was talking about, and he also had a bunch more projects going on.i went to take a look at it and its not too bad, but ive never rebuilt a bike before so i need some help. Im also trying to keep it as cheap as possible, sub 300, with 100 spent on the bike. Its not a race bike, but just needs to run. I forgot to mention, he has a mikuni carb with boyeson power reeds. A new DT shock. 1) The first question is, where can i find pistons/rings for it? He said theres some on ebay, and i know wiseco has one but im not sure what size to order, and I know i don't need a performance piston. 2) If in the case that i need a new connecting rod, where could i find one of those? 3) How much is it going to cost on average to get it honed and resleeved, or in another way, bored out? How far can these 175 engines be bored out too?
Moderator Cynic Posted April 16, 2012 Moderator Share Posted April 16, 2012 Sorry mate that bottom end is dead, crank rebuild at the very least. The corrosion you can see on the counterweight will be on the bearings and there is no acceptable way to sort that. Soon as it runs the tiny bits of dust and corrotion will become grinding paste. Check e-bay you should be able to find the bits for not too much money, i just chucked a load of stuff away. A good short motor too funnily enough so it shouldn't cost a fortune but your going to knock a 100-150 sized hole in that buget for the engine alone.
