Keiran95 Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 Hello all, as some may know i recently bought a dtr and i had my very first ride on it yesterday and after a long hard ride i noticed that barrelt had nasty runs down from the head and it looks like the head gasket is knackered, i will provide pictures soon, i was just wondering if anyone knows where to get the athena 170cc gasket for my dtr as the only one i can find is this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-TDR-125-TOP-GASKET-SET-ATHENA-KIT-65MM-170cc-/280551840052?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item4152315934 Thanks for all the help!
Moderator Airhead Posted January 15, 2012 Moderator Posted January 15, 2012 from pjme i would assume keiran http://pjme.co.uk/acatalog/Yamaha_DT125R_Engine_Parts_Top_End.html
Keiran95 Posted January 15, 2012 Author Posted January 15, 2012 Thanks airhead, although i still couldnt find the gasket heres a picture, it's taken from my mobile so its not a great picture it seems to be leaking from the front of the barrel AND the head.. i was told when i bought it that its the 170cc barrel - trying to find a gasket for it is horrible!
Moderator Airhead Posted January 15, 2012 Moderator Posted January 15, 2012 well keiran if you had looked properly you would have seen pjme sell the full 170cc athena kit including the gasket! give them a call
Keiran95 Posted January 15, 2012 Author Posted January 15, 2012 Fair enough oldgit! - i found it else where now anyway - Thank you for your time though
Moderator Airhead Posted January 16, 2012 Moderator Posted January 16, 2012 keiran check the head isnt warped using a straightedge
Keiran95 Posted January 17, 2012 Author Posted January 17, 2012 If it was warped would it run bad or is there any other way of checking it because I don't really want to be pulling it apar, but I'll ask my dad to have alook as he is good with these things, thanks again
Moderator Airhead Posted January 17, 2012 Moderator Posted January 17, 2012 well you will have the head off to change the gasket, all i'm saying is while its off check it, the chances are it will be fine but if it is warped you may soon get another leak
Keiran95 Posted January 17, 2012 Author Posted January 17, 2012 Ok, i'll get the gasket ordered and get him to check the barrel for me, i'm starting to think this is why i got the bike so cheap and a spare barrel - hmmmmmm
Moderator Airhead Posted January 17, 2012 Moderator Posted January 17, 2012 its the head you need to check keiran
Keiran95 Posted January 17, 2012 Author Posted January 17, 2012 o , i think the barrel is also leaking near the 2 front bolts that hold it into place?
Keiran95 Posted January 21, 2012 Author Posted January 21, 2012 UPDATE: I ordered the whole top end gasket kit although now i have noticed that it isnt using much water at all.. and the leak looks to have stopped, o i have cleaned the marks off that was on the head and barrel and i'm going to keep an eye on it - Thanks for your time Airhead, Much appriciated!
Moderator Airhead Posted January 21, 2012 Moderator Posted January 21, 2012 if i were you in the meantine try torqueing the head bolts when the engine is warm....you may find one loose?
Keiran95 Posted January 21, 2012 Author Posted January 21, 2012 i'll have a go at it, by torqeing what do you mean? i think i know what you mean but just to be certain could you please explain
Moderator Airhead Posted January 21, 2012 Moderator Posted January 21, 2012 Ahh just make sure none of them are too loose but dont 'murder' them either, it takes experience and i feel you havent got much of that? hopefully they will feel tight enough.
Ryan09 Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 When tightening the head bolts do it in opposites otherwise you will be there all day and none will tighten up. You probably have a spare barrel and is most likely the original as when you buy the Athena kit you get a whole top end including barrel with it.
