I'm new to the forum and was hoping to get some expert advice.

I've just started using the DT again after about 3 months of it being stood. It rode fine for about 100 miles yesterday then when I took it out today after replacing spark plug, it went 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, N and nothing else! no grinding or funny noises, just a neutral where 5th gear should be. I changed the oil today afterwards but that's made no difference.

It has also been slipping out of 2nd gear into neutral.

I think it could be a selector fork but I won't know until I take her for surgery.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks,

Pete

Still the same. I took it out again and it's got worse. I got about three miles down the road, stopped at a set of lights and when I went to move off, I couldn't get second gear. When I got it, itkept slipping out until I managed to select third. Now I'm stopping in third and slipping the clutch to gain momentum and only have 3rd & 4th. It's not been dropped, banged or kicked. I checked & replaced the gear oil (it came out pretty clean).

sound like possible clutch slip, you need to check for that before opting for a bigger engine strip, can you select 3rd gear start the motor pull on the brakes and let the clutch out with some throttle, the engine should stall against the brakes, if it doesnt it's clutch slip,

you say its worse after oil change...did you use motorcycle specific oil? wet clutches on bikes need this as you may know

Tried it and I don't think it's the clutch. I tried a bit too hard and nearly went throug the back wall The bike's only got 8k on the clock. I use silkolene medium weight gear oil. I used to use atf in the KTM but change it every ride or two. The DT has only ever had 2 stroke bike specific Silkolene.

It only slips out of 2nd when going up through the gears and is fine if I gear down from 3rd. I know I shouldn't still be riding it but I am and at least now I can stop at the lights in 2nd. When setting off though (in the morning and after work), 2nd engages properly when I reach down and jerk it up by hand. I reckon it's gonna be the forks. I'm gonna drain it off this weekend and look under the cluch cover to see if I can clock anything obvious with the shift arm or drum. may as well measure the clutch plates too.

I can now officially tear up my L plates. 2nd gear is working a little better now but can put this to one side for a bit 'coz the 500's coming out to play!
