schoolhouse Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Hello, I just bought a 1984 Yamaha FJ 600, thats a 4 cyl half fairing type sports tourer for $800. Great bike for a taller rider. It has about 50,000 km on the clock, new bearings in the front by seller, and battery. dampeners. 1. Where is the best place to buy FJ parts on the internet?? Its hard to even find a taillight lens! $40 for a piece of plastic? wow! I'm trying to find a lower fairing too... and a right mirror. 2. Tire reccomendations- I've read that Metzlers or Dunlaps are good. But I dont know. I'm a newer rider so I am looking for good grip, confidence builder, longevity, and wont kill me in the rain. 3. Any ideas on upgrading the carbs etc to run smoother or should I just clean them? 4. Any ideas on upgrading the suspension? Thanks!!! A. PS- what do you think of the FJ600 1984 anyways? Not a lot on the internet about them!! I think they look decent considering their age.
mAdAsZaC Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 i have an 1984 xj600 (its an fj600 but they were released in Australia as an xj) 1. I'm trying to find a lower fairing too... and a right mirror. its quite hard to find parts for them (if you find any please let me know) 2. Any ideas on upgrading the carbs etc to run smoother or should I just clean them? clean them, or find a better carb and check that they are not warn out, like my friends (causes flooding). 4. Any ideas on upgrading the suspension? i recommend that you take the suspension to be looked at, or make sure that it is not leaking any fluid considering the price and the age of the bike. what do you think of the FJ600 1984 anyways? They are great bikes, im not so sure about them for learners though because they do have quite a bit of power and could possibly scare a rider. and im 6'3 and yeah they have a great set up for taller people. and if you are ever going to wreck this bike please i am looking for a lefthand control unit (the one with the flashers and indicators etc.)
