Toutsuite Posted August 30, 2011 Share Posted August 30, 2011 Hi all, as above, speedo/odometer has stopped working, strangely right after the bike got washed (by hand, no pressure hose or jet spray). I assume some cable somewhere has come undone or snapped? Anybody know if this is an easy job to fix (an how to do it?) -Edit- the front wheel cable connection was a bit loose, I'll unscrew the speedo housing and see if the cable has come loose that side. Well worth undoing the instrument facia and checking that end as well. I was a bit unsure about disturbing everything at first. but its quite a simple operation to pull apart. Ttaskmaster Posted August 31, 2011 Share Posted August 31, 2011 It's possible you jet-washed the lube out of the cable and it bound against the casing, rendering it what we call "proper f**ked". Toutsuite Posted August 31, 2011 Author Share Posted August 31, 2011 Cheers, guys, thanks for the advice. It turns out the cable is snapped. The jacket is looking a bit frayed as well so I'll replace the whole thing. However another problem has presented itself. Upon undoing the speedo from the tank I discovered all but one of the allen bolts holding the thing on were loose. This would appear to be because the nuts on the other side are either missing or in the case of the centre one, can pass right through the retaining bracket (or whatever it's called). They simply screw into the rubber bushes held in the brackets- The rubber is to dampen the vibration and keep your speedo in good nick. If they are that loose, I'd suggest adding a bit of rubbery sealant type stuff into the holes, reducing the diameter. Poke something (narrower than the bolt shaft) into it to shape the hole smoothly and then let it set/dry completely before putting teh bolts back in, else you'll have stuck bolts. Whoops! I've bought a new rubber washer from Wickes, that should do the trick. I'll also squirt some silicone into the loose ones at the top/side, make a hole with a toothpick and leave for 24hrs. Replacement cable arrives tomorrow anyway. Now as I understand it, the cable (and jacket) is not prelubricated is it? Any idea what sort of oil/grease I should use? or WD40? It turns out the rubber washers at the top do contain a nut, integrated into the rubber as it were. The one on the left had excessive play up and down, which I corrected with a bit of superglue. Tightens fine now. The middle one at the bottom which is missing: took one of the wide Wickes rubber washers, cut out a slightly bigger hole and stuck the nut in that I found when I opened the casing. Fits nice and snug. Cut a thin slice off a second, smaller washer and superglued it on top of the bracket. Placed the other washer (the one with the nut) under the bracket, which fits quite snugly with no need for glue. All three allen bolts now screw in fairly tightly. Problem solved! Toutsuite Posted September 2, 2011 Author Share Posted September 2, 2011 Well I'm pleased to report I've now replaced the cable! Ordered it from Wemoto and was delivered at work in no time. At almost half the price quoted from local Yammy dealers (they were quoting £20ish, got it for £10ish (plus pp). It's possible the cable is from a different bike (the XT to be specific - that's what the label on the bag said) but it works! The local Yammy dealers didn't have it in stock - claiming it was quite rare for a speedo cable to go... just my luck really! Anyhoo I guess I've just had my first "initiatory" experience in fixing my bike! Hope there aren't too many of those in the future! Anything beyond the most basic repairs is beyond my competency. And call me Snake Competency is developed through experience. Preferably learning from that of others, but your own is equally valid. You will eventually encounter problems as things do wear out.
