Anybody who has read my project will know that my bike is an ex field bike and it was chucked together quite shoddily to get through the MOT, including the electrics. What I need to know is when you turn the ignition on, will your headlights and indicators work without the engne running as mine will only work the brake light and horn so I'm wondering if this is normal and you have to have the engine running to power the big stuff.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am rewiring all the indicators as they have been hacked off so knowing that they shouldn't work without with the engine on will cut out a lot of frustration!!!!

PS My battery doesn't have a great charge in it as it has been sat for a month now while I've been tinkering.

hi

indicators should work with engine not running.

Thanks for the reply. Would the indicator light on the speedo flash even if there wasn't a complete circuit with indicators attached?

After much head scratching later and sussing out the colours that I need to be looking for, there is no sign of life from the indicator light on the dash.

As far as I can gather from the bible that is Haynes, each indicator has an earth and a live, the lives go to the switch gear and the also branch off to the indicator relay.

I'm now suspecting that:-

1) Mr genius who put it back together (and he who created the engine stop horn) has removed the indicator relay :madflame:

2) after following the wiring into the cluster behind the speedo, the wires then don't go anywhere

3) the indicator relay is past it's sell-by

Worst case scenario I'm planning to replace the dark brown and dark green original live wires with bright blue and bright red wiring so I can see them and as I don't plan to sell the bike it's not going to offend any concours specialist.

Would I be correct in assuming that I can simply start afresh with my wiring and put it into the female side of the block and run it through the bike from scratch? :eusa_pray:

Sounds simple but experience is teaching me that it rarely is!!!

PS I've found a really cheap please for the indicator relay if that is the culprit www.pattern-parts.net

Yep I was right, no indicator relay. Got one delivered yesterday so I should be able to post something in the projects page with an update after the weekend. Thanks to all those who replied

Be carefull of just running that feed through the bike, the ind circuit is fed from the same live as the brakes etc as your prob aware. There may be connections within the loom that are not immediately obvious so take your time.

Just so you know how it works. When you switch the switch at the bars to one side or the other you actually make a connection that links the indicator relay to whichever set of indicators is needed be it left or right.

The dash light bridges the two, so it is fed from the lit side and earths through the unlit side (see?) so the dash lamp will never light without the indicators working properly as all its power comes from the wiring to the front indicator units.
