Posted August 4, 201114 yr just wondering what everyones opinions on what chain oil / greese to use. was thinking about getting a scotoiler, but when i was speaking to one of the local bike mechanics he was saying if i was to use industrial grease, ( the tube type you need a grease gun for ) it would last as long as a full scotoiler. . . what you's think ?
August 4, 201114 yr The rivets and plates on a chain need lubricated, some lubricants last longer than others, some are more messy, some less, you could use margarine or Bertoli extra virgin olive oil (seriously), the lubrication is a friction reducer-nothing more ! my own preference is to use the old engine oil from a previous service-'cos I've already paid for it', but I'm a Jock Scott oilers use oil-ok its got a fancy label and costs a bit, and its lazy there are aerosols available with anti-fling lubricant, Industrial grease could be used-but messy (black moly) for example the idea is to keep it lubed, clean with parafin every month or so, then re lube-seemples this is one of those 'can-o-worms' areas each to their own
