Billy the kid Posted December 20, 2004 Posted December 20, 2004 Hi to all,i will try to polish my stainless steel pipes with some polish kit that it plugs at the electric drill. My question is:when i bought the motorcycle new the color of the pipes was gold to silver. When i tried to polish on a spot this gold color gone and it became the color of steel(like siver).Does the pipes have been threated with some kind of stuf the prevents corrosion? If yes does anybody knows what is this stuf.I'm asking because i don't want to do some bad thing and make them more worst that they are now.(They have some corrosion on them)
Guest JMW Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 I'm no metals expert but, stainless steel is a mix of chrome and steel - the chrome gives it the shine and makes it hard and corrosion resistant. Are you sure the pipe is stainless or could it be plated with chrome or nickle etc.. ? If you have polished off the shiny surface then you may wekk have exposed the base metal. If it is stainless then this won't happen as it's that same metal all the way through. Clean it up and see if it corrodes when exposed to the elements. If it does then a re-plate or paint is needed. I hope it works out. J
