cnecking engine oil level

xv virago 125

a question asked by my son, do i check the engine oil level in & top up with the bike resting on its side stand, or hold the bike upright (which makes it hard to see the little spy window on the side)

not being sure, thought id ask the question here.

Thanks, have always told him to check it upright, but was never 100% myself
