Customisation questions

I am quite new to the Dragstar Classic 650, and am looking to add a transparrent alternator cover-only ever seen one of these on a streetfighter, but want to know if they exist for custom bikes. Anyone else know where I can get one? Or if they are just a custom made part?

I didn't think bikes had one of those.

You mean a regulator-rectifier cover?

i know what u mean m8 a clear cover on the engine casing showing the flywheel and stator, think there custom made im afraid. i think i saw them on ebay a while ago, this company was offering the mod to put some form of see through glass/plastic on the engine casing......have a look for "custom" and search the pages....never know it might crop up.

Also, would anyone be able to tell me how much it costs to have major work done to a bike such as mine (exhausts, engine tuning etc)? I would try doing it myself, but I am the worst DIYer I know, and this carries accross to anything I do with bikes. I'd rather not damage this one, so I'm gonna need third party help (see if the guy that does the work will let me sit in, so I can learn someething). Also, what is generally a good point at which to start customisation? There are so many after market parts and I am completely overwhelmed by the choices.

Sorry that all my first posts are mostly questions, but I am a complete novice when it comes to bikes, having passed my full test only a month ago.

Tuning and mechanical maintenance costs vary, depending on who does it.

Yamaha dealers are usually FECKING expensive!!!

Specialists are next, usually preferring to work on Harleys, so they'll act like they're doing you a favour by lowering themselves to accept your business.

Most mechanics charge around £20-30 an hour, plus parts.

Find and make friends with a local independent mechanic. One who works for beer is invaluable!!

Customisation... Literally, your choice!!

That's the whole point - You decide what you want.

IMO - Forget customisation for now. Get out there and ride for a while. You'll learn far more than your training could ever teach you.

Then, start looking at what to add. Most of my own mods are either functional and/or through neccesity.

Cheers for that, I know what you mean about Yam dealers. And they take forever. I had a faulty indicator crop up about 2 weeks ago, and the guy told me he wouldn't be able to do it till 10th May. So I tried the dealer who sold me my first motorbike, and half an hour and £10 later, it was done.

I've heard about Harley specialists too, aparrently can be a little snobby about japanese customs,think the only customs should be american.

I'll have a ride about and see if I can find any good indy mechs in the area. Gonna try and sign up with a small MCC, so maybe they can help.

PS, I've only had the thing a month and already put 1300 on it!

id say ride the bike and enjoy it for as long as you can :D last thing u want to do is spend a couple of grand customizing it to find that 6 months down the line ur bord and want something bigger or comfier or something totaly different.

iv customised my bike but thats because i blew the engine.... :unsure: so i decided to do more than just put an engine in and turned it into a fully custom bike.

I have less polite things to say about Harley snobs, but this is a public forum. No problem with Harley fans... so long as they don't think the sun shines out their exhaust pipes. I don't hold much respect for 'scene' types and people who tell me what they think I should and shouldn't be doing as if they're some kind of authority, when they clearly aren't.

Which area are you in?

Check out your local MAG group, too. Usually a sound bunch of folks, they are.

There is a very good reason for that.......they make they're living fixing motorbikes, and Harleys are built so badly that they breakdown a lot! :lol:

I'd still love a Heritage Softail though!

Probably wont be doing anything mechanical to it yet then, just mostly aesthetic. Although when I eventually do, I've got my eye on the V+H short shot staggered pipe system. Are they relatively simple to install? Just thinking of how many hours I'd have to pay a mech to install them. Won't be for 6 months or so yet
