hey guys i had a good search round on the forum before posting this this is where i am at :-

when i bought my xj600 (21st march) all was good and working (a good friend of mine took it for a spin, and i checked over everything i could), but oweing to the fact that i have not passed my mod 2 yet (am booking in for test next week) its been stood since. note she already has braded hoses.

2 weeks ago i had to move her, and found that my rear brake had siezed on, i mannaged to free it off enough to move the bike, and gave the rear pads and caliper a good dose of brake cleaner. i also noticed at the time that the brake pedal went all the way down to the hard stop with no resistance, yet no brake fluid was leaking anywhere.

i got hold of a brake bleeding kit, following haynes instructions (i have bleed afew cars in my time), when i first cracked the bleed nipple alittle brake fluid came out then nothing, no matter how long i pumped for. I then got hold of a big syringe and sucked some fluid out, topping up the resivour as i went, yet still no resistance on the pedal at all. i tried forcing (new) fluid back and cracked the banjo's till i saw fluid come out incase of trapped air, it took quite a bit of force, and the resivour level did not change, and after a while i couldnt force anymore through.

i am at the stage where i think something has gone very wrong with the rear master cylinder , has anyone ever had anything like this?

also i am having a few problems finding a rebuild kit, anywhere

Yep sounds like the master cylinder, time to strip it down and replace all the 'O'rings me thinks, probably best to strip and reseal the caliper too

still trying to find a rebuild kit, wemotor dosnt list one, and none listed on evilbay

edit:- was looking through my haynes and i noticed there was no difference between the xj600 and fz600 rear setup, do anyone know if they are the same rear master cylinder?

I think if the mountings line up then your good to go, measure it and put the measurements up here, hopefully some helpfull type will confirm that their FZ600 has the same lug dimensions

i found the old master cylinder piston was stuck at the top because the boot had failed and the ball end of the link rod had corroded, and it was this dust that was holding the piston up.

so i bit the bullet and bought a Yamaha rebuild kit, all fitted and done now .... but now i cannot get the rear brake to bleed correctly, i think i have got all the air out of it. i have had to vaccum bleed it though, as the master cylinder dose not apear to be pushing brake fluid through

when i push the brake pedel, the pads grab the disk then release

anyone have any ideas?

when you assembled everything did you 'paint' all the parts, 'o' rings and cups with brake fluid as you went ?

no i didnt, as i had to take the master cylinder to work to get the old gut of it out (the circlip eyes had snapped off) so i gave it a very thin smear of silicone grease. it was all clean and moving freely though.

Well personaly I'de take it back off the bike and clean the silicone grease off all the parts and start again I'm afraid

guess i know what i'll be doing tomorrow then lol

i am going to try the brake pedal down trick though tonight .... just in case

YaY sorted!!!!

so i stripped down the rear master cylinder again, only to find the problem was not the grease, i had some how accidently put the spring and rubber cap/seal in the wrong way round

put it all right way round, cleaned off the grease, re assembled, bled in about 30 seconds
