Hi!

Coming back to biking after 41 yrs. My last bike was a '52 BSA A10, so the '98 Yamaha XJ600n I've just bought is very exciting!

It's a 2 owner, low miles bike that has been taken care of. But of course it has a problem! It starts and runs with great enthusiasm, but gear changing is ruining the riding pleasure. Letting the clutch back in after shifting meets nil revs and of course opening the throttle make this worse - from nil to strong instantly! Hate to think what this is doing to the transmission.

First (and most obvious) sign that all is not right is the tickover/idle. It ticks over well, but is 'hunting' all over the place.

Just like a leak in the inlet or vacuum line? I currently suspect the choke of either staying partly open, or a blockage somewhere?

Certainly it seems completely random, just like some foriegn object blocks and then unblocks a jet. So next week it's carbs off and strip and blowout, then balance.

In the mean time, the ignition components check out on the multimetre, apart that is from the igniter - which I understand cannot be checked in this way, and here is my specific question. Does this igniter unit have to be 'programmed' on installation. The manual says that when adjusting the electronic throttle position sensor, the igniter has to be switched to TPS setup mode. but does the igniter have to be setup on installation of another unit? I tried putting another igniter and all I got was a fast cranking of the engine but no ignition!

I read 'UNTOLD's account with interest.

Anyone?
