yamaha xj550 carb problem?

hi my xj550 will only start with the choke, and will not idle at all when choke is off, tried adjusting idle screw, but makes no difference, and when bike was ran for a while and stopped immediate starting was a problem. any help will be most welcome

    come on all you boffins you surely have some suggestions,most yam carbs must be the same setup?

    Has the bike been standing for some time as my FZ600 had similar problems having not moved for best part of 8 years.

    the carb was completely gunked up and it took a powerful air compressor and some new main jets to get it working a ok.
