Hi all, I have a query and hope someone can help me. In Jan I bought an XVS650 Classic and it came with a set of leather saddlebags and chrome side mounts. I decided to remove the bags (simple enough) but am not sure how to remove the chrome mounts. For a start the bolts are stuck fast so before I start to force these off, I want to understand how it fits together.

As far as I can see there is a chrome strip running from below the seat back across the rear fender which looks like is standard on the classic. Onto this a sisy bar has been bolted on and onto the strip holding the sissy bar on is two bolts holding the luggage mounts on. From what I can see though, the bolts holding the luggage mounts on go right through into nuts the other side of the fender so it looks like if I take these off, everything will come off. If so, I guess I just remove the luggage mounts and put everything else back on.

However, the bolts holding it all together look quite long so if I take the luggage mounts and put everything else back on, I would imagine the bolts will stick out quite far. Maybe the bolts had to be extended by the previous owner to allow for the fitting of the luggage mount, I dont know but I'm hoping someone readin gthis might.

If anyone has the slightest idea what I'm talking about and can help, i'd be very grateful.

Yes mate, you just about right. The bolts go all the way through into nuts. The nuts form pasrt of the fender. When the previous owner fitted the bags, the kit would have included longer bolts to go through the mounts. When you get the bolts off, measure the thickness of the mounts then deduct that from the bolt length, and thats the new length bolts you require. If theyve been on some time, they may take some shifting. Some release oil on the nut side under the fender, let it soak, repeat several times, then try tightening a touch first. Try one way then the other. When you fit the new ones try to buy stainless steel and put a bit of Copaslip on the threads

Correct as above. When I put my luggage mounts on they came with the longer bolts. I have put the original bolts somewhere safe
