Craw Posted February 27, 2011 Share Posted February 27, 2011 Hi all, I dug my bike out today after it being in storage for 4 years. Yes i know. In this time it hasnt been started or turned a wheel. All the forward controls seem to be in working order, the lights are good and the brakes are working fine however, I chucked a new fully charged battery into, drained out the old fuel and put in some fresh stuff along with an engine decrudder. Guess what, no surprises, it aint running very well at all. It seems only to be firing on one cylinder with the other kicking in occassionally. Tomorrow, Im gonna be replacing the spark plugs and through in some irridium ones to see if this helps but, does anyone know if im gonna have to open the carburator and give tthis a thourough seeing too or do you think ill be ok with this. The engine will only stay running on the choke and wont rev without dying. Any help here is much appreciated, thanks. Oh the bike is a 97 650 Drag Star. I wouldnt rush into dismantling it if it is just one because one pot runs fine. is there a 'PRI' (Prime) position on the fuel cock? if there is, try that for a while. My suzuki Bandit is always a pig to get going after a winter lay off, I have to leave it to warm up and at first it doesnt fire on all 4. However as it warms I find i can open the throttle more and more until it runs properly. During normal use though I dont have to do any of this. YPVS TONE Posted March 1, 2011 Share Posted March 1, 2011 Are you sure it only has one carb ? I have a manual on cd for a 97 XVS650 that shows two carbs but joined together in one bank. Tony. +1 My old mans 750 intruder LOOKS like it only has one carb but that is similar with one for each pot, but different. Bastard to get on and off too. Craw Posted March 14, 2011 Author Share Posted March 14, 2011 Just got phoned from the shop telling me my bike was ready, he said he had to dip the carbs in some kind of cleaning fluid, dunno what and that the jets were full of varnished fuel. So looks like its life in the old dog again. I do have one gripe with the guy though. He said he would get it up and running again for me and give me a price and then he|d give me a price for getting it propperly serviced and MOT'd, guess what he done the bloody lot and then said "Thats 306 quid mate in total" I know that for the work hes done thats dot that bad but it shouuld only have been up and running, not serviced and MOT'd and my wallet shouldnt be this empty just now.
