hi,the speedometer on my 125 virago is erratic and making a noise louder than the engine

(not hard) and drawing attention everywhere i go i,m new to biking but not sure what problem is i assumed dodgy speedo but have been told it could be speedo drive/or speedo cable which i disconnected and this seems to rotate ok just by spinning the wheel is the speedo drive hard to change for a novice also had the speedometer off but seems to be a sealed unit.any help appreciated.
